Odd problem with.. ATA controller?

I was hoping someone here would have some insight into a problem I am suddenly having with my computer. First of all, the motherboard is an Asus P5Be. It has 6 SATA ports, which I'm using 4 for two separate RAID0 sets, 1 for a backup HD, and 1 for optical.

So, of late, I've been having odd issues, such as the RAID taking longer than normal to post, or there being a delay when the HDs need to read/write, and on several occasions, my optical drive failing to show up at all in Windows. Yesterday, however, took the cake. I went to turn my computer on, and RAID took FOREVER to post (like a full minute), and when Windows started to load, it froze in the load screen. I tried several times, froze at the same point every time, took forever for RAID to post every time. Tried safe mode (or whatever W7 calls it), and it froze on load as well. Tried booting the secondary RAID array (also has a working W7 install) and it froze at the same point.

Finally, after going back to the normal RAID array, Windows loads, after being stuck in the load screen for several minutes. Of course, the optical drive is nowhere to be found in Windows.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? I checked the heatsink on the southbridge, and it was free from dust, so I don't think it's overheating or anything. Could it simply be dying?

If it's happening before even loading Windows, I would have to assume that there's an issue with the controller(s).

Found this over at Asus forum: http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&id=20061109234744125&board_id=1&model=P5B-E&page=1&count=36

Not sure if it'll help you or not.

Have you updated your drivers/BIOS to see if that would clear the issue?
Well, I think that, the board being so old, my drivers/BIOS are as up to date as possible. The thing is, this problem just sort of popped up, and is seemingly getting worse over time.

Does anyone know if the SATA bus is something that can just kinda burn out on a board?

***Update***

I wanted to update this, in case anyone else had a similar experience. After I posted this thread, the problem went away to some extent. But yesterday, my computer was freezing on boot again, when suddenly the though occurred to me: optical drive is causing it to hang. I unplugged the drive, and voila!
