Odd Overclocking ram results

I got a pair of pc2700 and pc3200 ram 2x512 each in duel channel mode for testing.

I have a 2800+ at 166 mhz

The pc2700(c2.5) at 166mhz yeilds about 2500 mbps in Sisoft Sandra

The pc3200 6-2-3-2 OCZ at 200mhz fsb, 166mhz cpu give me 2500 mbps.


I pushed the 3200 to 240mhz, and it didnt result in any performance gain in Sisoft Sandra!

When I overclock the CPU to 200mhz, then i finally see a gain to 3000 mbps, but no matter what the ram is at, or which pair it is.

So basically, my generic pc2700 is just as fast as expensive 3200. Makes no sense.

WTF!

Someone explain this to me. Why is it that the ram speed isnt improving performance?

Or is it that sisoft sandra doenst work correctly?
 
If I read your post right, you're increasing the clock of your ram and not the cpu right? If that's the case, then it could be possible that you've simply reached the maximum bandwidth that your cpu will utilize at that speed.

I get similar results when I run my FSB/DDR at 200/200 and then up the speeds to 200/250 (cpu speed staying the same). I get maybe 200 points difference between the two.

run your ram 1:1 with the cpu bus speed. You should see the results you're looking for then..

So why is it that you have to run 1:1 cpu to ram? You would think that 166/200 would be faster than 166/166.

Also, What clock multplier can I use with a 2800+? It is defualt 12.5. I tried setting it to 12.0 and 13.5, both times it wouldnt allow my computer to boot.
 
by running the ram faster than the cpu, you are simply "offering" the system extra bandwidth that it can use. However, if the cpu can't utilize that extra bandwidth, then you won't see an increase in performance.

You may see more of a difference on a P4 system if you run the ram faster than the cpu only because the P4 is such a bandwidth monster to begin with. But like I said before, I only saw a couple hundred points difference and that's with Sandra buffered (unbuffered may be different but I always forget what boxes to uncheck).

I don't have any experience with AMD systems, so I can't offer up an explanation for your other question. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the cpu isn't unlocked and when the mult. is changed to something other than what is locked it won't post?? Doesn't sound right to me, but I suppose it could happen.

Anyone with an AMD wanna help out?
 
The golden rule with AMD systems is NEVER EVER run your RAM and BUS out of sync. It's just not something you do on an AMD system...1:1 is a prerequisite for performance, you have to run them synchronously, full stop.
 
The 2800 overclocks to 200fsb 2500mhz no problem. What clock multiplier could I use with a 2800 is my question?

Is my 2800 locked? I cannot change it to any clock multiplier at 166 mhz. Is there a mod or a way to find out?
