odd mp3 player device question

A while back, I ran across a news item for a funny little mp3 play that didn't actually have ayn storage of it's own, but instead could itnerface with any standard thumb drive and would read any mp3's on that thumb drive.

At the time, I thought it was interesting and didn't see much market for the device Apparently I was wrong, as Sandisk has come out with a propriety version of the same thing that only works with their thumb drives, their Mp3 Companion.

At any rate, I thinking about this thing again becuase I'm going to be getting an external hard drive enclosure in the near future. I'm wondering if this thumb-drive-mp3-player-thing could read the mp3's off of a hard drive enclosure as well as from a thumb drive. Obviously, this peicemealed setup would make much of an ipod killer, but it would work well for long road trips (assuming one has a power inverter to power the hd, which I do).

I have no idea what this thing was called, so I haven't been able to find it again. If anyone else has any specifics on it (assuming I'm not just delusional), I'd love to hear them.
