Odd Memory Related Problem

I am working on an old HP with an MSI MS-6378 board (factory asus died a while back), with an athlon 1600 and 512mb of generic PC100 ram.

I replaced the board over christmas and I got it back today. The board would post fine, but when it came to finding something to load from, it wouldn't load from the hard drive (reverted to cd drive booting). When forcing it to load from the hard drive, it would appear to hang indefinetly right after checking the DMI. I checked the drive and it is fine. I inserted the XP disk and I kept getting hit with random page faults and other memory related errors.

I changed out the ram for some sticks of my own and the computer booted perfectly normal (even though her sticks passed memtest). It has ran for about an hour and rebooted a few times. On the last reboot, it is doing the exact same thing again, hanging right after checking the DMI (which the next step would be to load windows).

I am thinking that maybe whatever is wrong also fried my sticks. The computer had an overheating problem before which fried the previous motherboard, but I am not sure that is the problem this time around, as all the temps are good and the case door has been open ever since I got it here (so my sticks shouldn't have overheated). I would go right out and blame the motherboard in this case, but since my sticks did work for about an hour, I am confused at what is the actual underlying problem.
