odd gaming issues

Here are the specs
dell demension 8300
p4 3ghz ht
1gig ddr
radeon 9800 pro
audigy 2
120gig sata(primary)
100gig backup
pioneer a06
48x burner/dvdrom

fresh install of xp pro, only software installed is zone alarm and trillian, nothing else.

Only game installed is half-life(yeah, I know it is old, but, I am bored)

HL works fine,but, when I try to go to lan or online, it crashes.

It has been doing this, I have never been able to run HL on this system, or, battlefield vietnam.

I am a bit irritated.

I have no vlue why it does this, but, this game is so old that this syste should have no probs running it.

Other games work fine, such as armed and dangerous, prince of persia, need for speed underground, painkiller, far cry, q3, ut2k4, ut2k3, classic UT.

I am at end. I am not about to call habeb in india at the dell tech support center to find out why I am having problems.

I am still looking as to why it does this, only on HL and BFV.

I am angry.

I don't want to hear anytihng about me buying a dell, it was 1200 for this configuration back in january.

Any suggestions?

The computer locks up, I hit alt+ctrl+del and it says not responding. I can not end taks, I generally have to hold down the power button and restart.

I have all of the windows updates, newest ati drivers, and I even upgraded the bios on this beast.
 
Sounds to me like a shared IRQ conflict...have a look and if there are shared IRQ's then try moving PCI cards to different slots or assign them a specific IRQ.
 
Usually brand computers like Dell dont have IRQ issues at all, so i think its another problem.

Can you try:
Loading bios defaults (means relaxed memory timings, fast writes disabled, etc)
Check agp, cpu and memory voltages and cpu temperature
Run some memory test software and see if your memory is error free

My second tought is the power supply not being strong enough to keep everything running and voltage spikes causing computer to freeze.

I don't have the options of faster mem timings, fast writes, or voltage settings.

I plan to run memtest soon to see what is up with the ram.

I noticed today I was playing classic c&c and it crashed after about 1/2 hour, last time I had a box that did that it was a bad stick of ram.
 
It sounds like a PSU problem to me as well. Do you have any other PSU's around to take care of this?

I sold all of my good stuff, and then, some how, I ended up buying a dell :confused:
 
if it was the power supply I'm sure it would lock up under any 3d game with a lot of graphics not 2 and especially not half life, I have also seen dells that need repair right out of the box so don't assume it is perfect. I believe there might not be an IRQ conflict but it is starting to sound more like an AGP issue of some kind, try making sure your videocard settings are not maxing your system out or you will definitely experience some problems.
 
Perhaps a driver issue with the NIC? Have you tried another network card? Also, try running the game with the NIC disabled in hardware manager, and see if that works.

The nic that I currently use to connect to the net is an intel card, onboard from dell.

I will disable it and try it.

I also have a 3com installed, which I do not use. I have dual nics incase I decide to have a lan and need to suply the net:)

I think so, but I will try again, I have played games on my other rigs when I had them with ZA running w/o issue, it generally crashes to desktop and asks if I want to grant permission, go back into the game, all is fine.
 
at this point i would say fuck it and start swapin parts and see what happens
