Odd FPS drop problem in games...

I've noticed that in every game except CS 1.6, UT2k4, and Quake 3, my laptop loves to do this thing where it will get 200FPS one second and then 10-30FPS the next and then keep alternating the entirety of the game... anybody know what's up with that? My computer isn't throttling (the chip is actually cool), the video card only hits 50C, and it's set to disable speedstep... what's going on here? HL2 does it, CS:S does it, Doom 3 does it, BF1942 does it, and the list goes on... the hell?
I know that it's not the hardware not being up to the task, because in an empty area it will get 300FPS, then 20FPS, then 300FPS again, rinse and repeat... here's is the readouts for my favorite game (desertcombat) that I took in normal gameplay.

Alright kid, I suggest you take your foot out of your mouth and head on over to the mobile computing forum once in a while just to check it out because you obviously don't know a damn thing about Laptops.

Schpanky: Is your HDD taking a hit each time the frame rate dips? If it is it's probably swapping really bad, check what other apps are running in the background and do what you can to terminate them. Monitor your CPU usage as well and see what (if anything) is gobbling up your CPU cycles. It's nothing wrong with your Laptop from what I gather at this point.

It's only hitting about 60-70% load, only things that are running are a few services and the game... I was playing Battlefield Vietnam while at the airport the other day and I was seeing framerates that were absolutely fluid... this is so infuriating!

You do realize that my current setup is roughly equivallent to a Stock P4 3.2 and a GeForcce 6800, and completely wastes a Stock 3.2 + Stock 9800 Pro

This is quite a conundrum. I honestly can't tell you why the framerate would be good at an airport and so awful at home. Have you tried setting your power properties to always on and seeing if that helps. Couldn't hurt to try a different driver. Something fishy's going on here because the FPS drops regularly like clockwork.

1.) You're telling me, man! :(
2.) But I didn't mean it like, it's good in an airport, I'm just saying that I tried another game.
3.) I do have my power properties set to always, but it doesn't work so I manually enter the multiplier and voltage with RMclock (GREAT program, if you're interested)
4.) Yeah, I've tried two so far... suggesting any good ones? (I've had the 75.60 and... 76.90, I think that's what they were)
5.) Yeah, something is definately up, sometime today I'm going to see if it's the games... one thing about Vietnam is that it was at 16x12... perhaps games just don't like 1920x1200?

You could try 1600x1200 and see if that helps the FPS any in BF42. I mean I can run BF42 at 16x12 (before I switched to an LCD that won't do that res) with my P4 3.0 and 9800 Pro. See if that helps, I've heard such problems with BF42 and oddball resolutions on widescreens.

So perhaps this the reason, then? Got a few minutes, so I'll try that out now
