Odd CPU fan...

Ok so I finally got my case today (CM690) and built up the whole thing.

Everything seems to be okay, except the CPU fan.

The chip is Q6600 and the fan is the one that comes with the CPU, while the motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L with a Corsair 450VX PSU.

When I turn on the system, there is a one to two second delay before the CPU fan actually starts, and when I check the BIOS, it says it's spinning at 800 RPM (seven hundred something, near 800)...

Is that normal? Should I get a new fan? Will my new CPU burn up like a pie in a pit of fire!?!?
 
This is a "normal" problem with the Gigabyte P35 line, my mobo did the same thing at first boot.
Please set in the BIOS the CPU Fan Control to PWM.

A "normal" problem eh? Interesting... Thanks for the advise.

Setting the CPU fan to PWN mode seems to have done the trick. The fan is now spinning at three times the speed, faster than a roundhouse kick from Chuck Norris...

Would the low speed fan have harmed the CPU had I not changed the settings?
 
This is not a problem - it is working correctly. The fan does not turn on until it is needed. In other words, when the computer is first booted up, the CPU is cool enough to not require the fan. When it runs for a short time, the CPU heats up enough to require the fan to turn on.

If you prefer the fan to turn on immediately, then change the settings to force it to always run (as you did) at max speed or change the settings so that the minimum speed occurs at a lower temperature (such as at a temperature just below room temperature).

Ah... Thanks for the explanation. I guess I'm just used to the fan being on always whenever the computer is on.

So the quad core is *so* cool that it doesn't even turn on the fan eh...? Interesting...
 
with my 9450, i run my fan at 500 to 600rpm..zero problems:) (and that's with a decent overclock)
 
I have a Thermaltake MaxOrb cooler on my Q6600. It will actually idle fine without the fan. Even at my overclock settings. I do have speed step on, so at idle it is only at 2.1 GHZ.

I'm sure it would overtemp fairly quickly if it was flat out without the fan running. I am too chicken to try though.

:) cool enough at boot up to need zero rpms.. unless of course, you have a pre-BIOS script that begins quad core transcoding :D
