System:
AMD K6/2-500 (not + edition)
DFI K6BV3+
3dfx Voodoo3 3000 16MB
128MB RAM - 1x 64, 2x 32, Crucial Kingston Noname, respectivley...
LG CDRW / AOpen CD-ROM
20GB Western Digital 5400 RPM HD
Enligh 250w PSU
Windows98 SE, current.

Problem: This is intended as a low-end, old school game machine for a buddy of mine, and I built it out of old parts, did the whole clean install, etc, then put it through a four day torture test with Memtest86, Prime95, Advanced Troubleshooter 7 - Passed everything from memory to non destructive read/write to the HD, voltages on the PSU look fine, the CPU seems to hit 84 F under load... In other words, performing absolutely to spec.

So, PC is carted off, and when plugged in, is put on two extension cords, one non-shielded, over some distance, with other stuff plugged into it... And the computer now has been acting up. Diablo II hard locks upon loading the level, but if you hit ESC, the application virtually disappears; the same can be said for zDoom I and II, and Prime95 now will only run more than one attempt in Small FFTs and In-Place FFTs- Blend causes an instant error, and end of torture test. The PC refuses to boot up and shutdown at times - I'm feeling the power source as the problem, as that is the only thing that changed in computer when it moved, though it has many of the symptoms of a failing stick of (or sticks) of RAM - Scandisk A-OK'd the HD again.... I wasn't prepared when I happened to swing by with all the tools. So, anyways, before I do again, does anyone have an idea or two, or would you suggest that my guesses on the power source being likely?

bump, anyone?

Note: RAM has been checked and tested A-OK on another rig with Memtest86... Moving on to replace the CPU....

And for that matter, if anyone reading this has a Slot1 Mainboard for sale in the For Sale/Trade section, PM me with a link. (Backup plan.)

Any assistance appreciated.

It could be an actual power issue, but i sort of doubt that. Im thinking driver.

If he has really shitty wiring that may cause that, but id think itd just as likely poop out at boot time.

On a side note you shouldnt be running anything on an extension cord for any long period of time, and if so make sure it has a GFCI on it.

Generally you can run a 1500 watt power tool on a 20ft+ extension without issue, I wouldnt see a problem with a few hundred watts on an extensioncord. (watts divided by volts = amps ) The extension cord should have a listing on it, if even on the package of the max juice it can handle. (PC plus monitor should be a far cry from 1500 or so)

might be why it only messes up when loading something like a d2x level or a Doom thing, then both the HDD and Vid Card are being stressed, and perhaps there's just not enough power?

try shielding the entire extension cord(s). (maybe wrapped w/ electric tape or something? i have no idea how to do it, sorry! :()

heh me have same system like your friend, change the power sluppy and if everything go good den bad psu
