Odd "artifacting" when I first load a game...

I recently upgraded to dual unlocked 6950s and a ZR30w display. I love the setup, but I am perplexed by this weird occurance that happens when I play a game. The only way I can describe it is a bunch of random, black dots that appear all over the screen either in a game menu or after the game is loaded. It reminds me of artifacts, but my cards are not overheating. The odd thing is this always goes completely away after about a minute or two. Im not sure if it's GPU related or if it's something with the display.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I'm not overly concerned because it never lasts for too long, but I am still wondering what causes it, and if it could be related to the 6950 unlock. Thanks!

Just because the card isn't overheating doesn't mean that it cant artifact. This is actually becoming fairly common with unlocked 6950s. My buddy had the same thing and had to get a new card. It was happening on the other bios too.

Just a risk you take when you mess around with your card like that.

Why would the problem just disappear then? It only happens for a short time, then I can game for hours without seeing it again. If it was a video card issue, wouldn't it be persistent?

It's happening in COD4 and Fallout New Vegas, I'll fire up Starcraft 2 and Civ V to see..

I bet your vRAM is going. Which is what has happened to many people who oc'd the weaker 6950 vram chips to 6970 levels.

same, but i didn't want to go their as a first move, one more classic case of people pushing their ram speed and or voltage with out popping off the heat sink and downloading the wight paper for the ram chips so as to know what it is their doing and what the limits on the ram chips in question are and\or checking the heat levels on the ram chips as they one up the speed on the ram chips.

so some ram just frys..maybe not right away but given time..i might be wrong but you know..smells like it.

Dots usually means your VRAM is overheating. Its quite possible that the temperature jumps up when you load a game, and until the fan speeds up to compensate, the vram is technically overheating. Try downclocking the ram and see if the problem goes away.
