Well, My brother has a 9700 Pro and he was having problems with it... So I decided to try to help him troubleshoot it. I tested everything and even reformatted(he wanted to anyways). Odd thing was I was still having the problem. Not thinking it could be hardware I tried different drivers and DX versions. Still same problem, so I was stumped. I decided to give the companies tech support a try who said I did everything on thier troubleshooting list. They said they will send out a new card and I send in the broken one. I went to go take it out of the computer and put in an old 7000 VE for a temporary fix until the new one arrives and I noticed somthing. The Core HSF had come off the GPU half way. One of the srew things had come off. I was still amazed the card still booted windows... I guess it fell off a few days ago when he started having problems. I wonder how this could happen though, he never moves his computer or anything... Was the 9700 faulty?? I just found this quite odd.
 
It is possible that the card is not even bad. Do the problems crop up immediately after entering Windows or do they take a few minutes to show up? If it is the latter, that suggests that it is just a thermal issue and reattaching the HSF could be all it takes to remedy the situation.

If the hsf retention is faulty you are well within your right to RMA. Just figured I'd throw that out there incase you don't want to wait on the RMA process. RMAing is not such a bad thing though considering ATi is kicking up the warrentee on RMA'd parts to five years as I understand it.

Well Im RMAing it through the company who made his computer. I think it was just faulty. It doesnt stir up immidiatly, and it only happens during video intense situations. It just freezes and puts up lines all over the screen etc. Ill try reattaching it though.
 
in this case an rma would be the equivalent of reattaching the hsf, only with rma'ing wasting more time. get some arctic adhesive and glue that bitz back on and it should be fine again. altough, i agree that this would constitute an rma by anymeans.... i think it would be silly to wastethe time to rma
 
I attached it back on and it works, but I just hope it doesnt come out again otherwise I am going to have to RMA... It probley got loose after during shipping and just the pull of gravity finally took it off.. I hope that thats whath happened instead of it being faulty.
