OCZ Vertex 3 - experience?

What has been peoples experience with the vertex 3 drives.

I have an intel x-25m g1 right now which is great but I'd like to upgrade to something with SATA 3 speeds and TRIM support.

Now the only reason I really ask is because I absolutely despise OCZ as a company. The memory I've bought from them has failed, they are sneaky little dishonest bastards with the rebates, and their company generally sucks.

That said - the benchmarks are pretty decisive and the Vertex 3 120gb is going for $250 on newegg which seems like a decent price compared to what I paid for my x-25m.

So basically - what have people experienced with these drives. Is SSD the true calling of OCZ's otherwise poor memory manufacturing? Do they crap out on people? Are they lightning fast even compared to another SSD?

Don't go against your past experience. OCZ is to be avoided.

It sounds like a Crucial m4 may be a good choice for you. It is SATA 6Gbps, and has higher performance than the Intel X25-M.

Yeah I'm really leaning against the vertex 3 now. Even though the price is nice and the bechmarks are all great the "real world" difference has got to be miniscule and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it ends up crapping out long before another ssd.

What are your guys thoughts on Intel 510 and the SandForce SF-2281 Kingston HyperX? Those were the other two I was looking at and they're both about the same price ~270

The Intel 510 is another good choice for a SATA 6Gbps SSD, but it is more expensive than the Crucial m4.

The Kingston HyperX is very new, so no one really knows how many problems it will have. I would wait at least 3 months, and preferably 6 months, before buying one.

I read that the kingston uses intel nand so that's got to be a good sign - does the m4 perform similar to the 510 or is it worth the price increase?

I've been incredibly pleased with the x25-m except for the fact that I got no trim love with the firmware updates. To be honest though the degradation is not bad. The real impressive thing about the intel drives is just their straight reliability. OCZ is a company that inflates their numbers and doesn't honor rebates and intel is the polar opposite. They just put out a solid product.

I read something about the intel not using intel memory as they did the x-25m's though - that they outsourced it. I guess that was the only reason I didn't know for sure I wasn't sure if this generation of intels lived up to the last one or if they were compromising to try to compete with SandForce.

It's hard to decipher all this crap when one review raves about the vertex 3 being the fastest thing they've ever seen and the next one saying those numbers are cooked.

I saw that one Kingston carry the Intel brand but not sure if they all are. I have a 30GB Kingston SSDNOW on my mini Ascrock Ion 330 and after 1029 and still rocking at 99%. I have just recently purchased the Intel X-25M G2 160GB. Still finishing on the setting to get the best out of the SSD. If you really want to upgrade now do not go with the OCZ. Stay with Intel or try Crucial. Or else wait for the Third-Gen Intel. Why? Because it will have a Power Safe Write Cache which could be very important due to improper shutdown or power failure. I would have waited if I`ve known about it. Should be coming out hopefully soon since they are testing the firmware.

The Intel 510 is a little faster on sequential writes than the Crucial m4, but the Crucial m4 is faster on 4KB random IO. For typical desktop or laptop usage, I do not think most people would notice the difference in the performance. That is why I recommended the Crucial, since it is cheaper.

As far as I know, all Intel SSDs use Intel flash. You might have been thinking of the controller. The Intel 510 uses a Marvell controller, while the X25-M and Intel 320 use an Intel controller. The Crucial m4 also uses a Marvell controller.

I bought Vertex 3 when i upgraded my system about a month ago. I would stay away from it. I've started getting blue screens, and a system that wont boot until i physically unplug/replug the drive with the latest firmware (why did i upgrade the firmware when i didn't have issues!?)

I was deciding between a Vertex 3 and an m4 when i bought mine, I chose... poorly

You're right it was the Marvell controller I was thinking of. Thanks for all the info I think I will end up going intel 510 or m4.

I have a Vertex 3 240GB - worked well for a week then it disappeared from the BIOS so I couldn't boot up. Apparently this is common, you can see for yourself if you check their support forums.

I had to RMA the drive. I should have the replacement soon. Supposedly the latest updated firmware should solve this issue but I'll have to wait and see.

In doing this the only way for me to recover the data from this drive would be to have it professionally done by a third party.

This was a major let down. Other than the above issue the drive is great, it's fast and obviously silent.

OCZ < dirt

Ive got over 1TB of OCZ SSDs...sitting in a box because they are bricks, THANKS OCZ!

Get a real SSD; Intel, Crucial, Samsung

Owned a vertex 3 for almost 2 months and has been great. Upgraded from 2.06 to 2.08 and not one single problem. Drive is smoking fast. Then I upgraded to 2.11 and I'm getting bsod's, drive dissapearing, etc. That's just great.

If the OP is still looking for vertex 3 experiences, mine have been great. I haven't really had any issues at all with mine, and I got it almost the day they were released. I have upgraded from 2.02 -> 2.06 -> 2.08 and now on 2.11.

LOL. OP is asking for people with personal experience with their V3, not opinions.
I've had a total of 5 Vertex 3's on P67 boards now - all have been smokin' fast and absolutely problem free. Still on FW 2.02 on the two I still own. Love 'em - got 'em on release day.

That said, a lot of folks have had issues. Some configuration error, some not. I'd say you might be taking a bit more of a gamble buying an SF SSD vs. others.

I am also keenly interested in this topic. I'm so freakin tempted by the performance of the OCZ Vertex 3 MAXIOPS... but sooo many issues. I guess OCZ has 'admitted' 0.33% failure rate on these things, but come on it seems substantially greater than that! I know vocal minority or whatever, but I've seen SO few positive experiences with these things.

My experience with the Vertex 3 120GB (my first and last OCZ product ever) was rather bad.

I bought it on July 7 and installed Windows 7 HP x64. The first BSOD occurred right after a few restarts followed by the SSD not being recognized anymore by the UEFI/BIOS of my ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe. I upgraded the Firmware together with several Secure Erases to 2.08, 2.09 and 2.11. 2.09 was some kind of workaround FW that made the Vertex 3 slower but more stable. None of them fixed the problems.

OCZ refuses to admit the problem is on their side and blames the Intel SATA Controller even though some AMD users have similar problems. I returned the Vertex 3 and got a new replacement which worked for 2 days before it started with the same problems, no matter what FW.

Their reps treat users searching for help on their support forums, including myself, like we're all idiots and tell us to repeat some odd 15 step procedure over and over again so maybe our SSD will work the next time (lol?).

IMO a SSD drive, just like a regular HDD, is a plug and play device and should work out of the box without any kind of tweaks. I eventually got tired of all these problems and bought an Intel 510 120GB which works perfectly fine.

OCZ is good in marketing benchmark numbers and thats it, i stay away from that scam company in the future. If you cum over benchmarks and like to tinker around go for the Vertex 3, if you want a reliable PC go Intel. (No harm intended, just my personal experience).
