I'm told they don't perform any better than normal SSD's. I'm also under the impression they are not very stable. Is this true?

I've seen benchmarks and it seems impressive, but benchmarks are one thing, real world performance is a completely different story. Like, I used to own a Radeon 4000 series video card that technically outperformed my current card, but it was so unstable it was unusable.

Please note that I am not talking about, nor do I have any intention of spending more than 200$ for such a device. So, I'm really asking about the low end offerings.
