Being bored last weekend, I built up a USB LED keyboard lamp. Was a simple build and even though I could have bought one cheaper, I had fun knocking it out.

Now for the question: I noticed when I turned off my computer, the lamp was still lit. I thought this was strange and moved the lamp to my back up machine and plugged it in, no power.

New computer is built with an OCZ Powerstream 520 and an Asus M2N-E. Old computer is an Asus A7N8X-X with a generic 400w. PSU.

Is it common for the USB ports to have power when the computer is turned off? Is it a property of the MB or PSU? Or is this just an aberration?

+5v standby rail on the new PSU. i think there will be a jumper to enable it. Try plugging a corded optical cable into each machine whilst off, the ocz will light the mouse, the other not

It doesn't surprise me that there is power to the board. There is a green LED indicator. It just surprised me that USB had power when it was off.

I did try the mouse trick. Neither board will light a mouse when it's off.
