Are these comparable to the OCZ powerstream? Any good? I want to get a new PSU because my Xconnect caused my LIS2 to die... wtf.... so bad. I'm ditching this Xconnect asap.

Good to hear that you're ditching the X-Connect.

The Modstreams are similar to the Powerstreams in that they are both Topower P6s with different options tacked on from the factory. Topower claims a 3% regulation, where OCZ claims a 1% regulation, which is a bit strange as Topower makes the PSUs. While they are both Topower P6s, it has been said that the Modsteam isn't the exact same high-quality PSU (in terms of performance) that the Powerstream is. I think you will be happy with it. If not, look at the Antec Neopower.

There are a million x-connect !!!!!!s(so why doesn't fan+boy show up?) in the Hot deals section right now (and every now and then some stray in here) that are going to flame you for saying the x-connect is anything but the messiah. Just letting you know. Good luck and sorry your shit got toasted by that POS.

I have recently just bought an OCZ Modstream and this thing runs like a champ...I had a X-connect before simply for look reasons and the X-connect cannot power my machine. I would have random reboots and cpu-z would freeze when its trying to find the voltages and the speed of the ram. I blaimed the crashes on the ram in the first place but after random crashes and stuff, I decided to dish out the money for the OCZ Modstream.

I am running on a ABIT IC7-G, 2.8ghz P4@3.3ghz (945mhz FSB), 1gig of corsair XMS PRO, x800xt, Audigy 2, WinTV PVR-350, 3 Hard Drives, 1 DVD-ROM, & 1 DVD-Burner. Also am running 3 Antec Smartcool 80mm case fans. The OCZ Modstream runs the system like a champ... while the x-connect would crash/reboot my comp while viewing wmv files or even watching tv with my tv tuner. So....lesson learned from being stupid for buying the x-connect, the modstream powers my system so much more stable!!!

Also the X-connect would make like a weird electronic distortion noise in the back of the psu, and then theres the smelll that was coming from the back of the psu because of the gripload of glue stuck on the heatsinks. Overall, X-connect is cheaply made and shitty quality. Just my 2 cents :)

comparable yes exactly how closely related is unknown

wherein OCZ's marketing spin \ rumor mill
and intransigence in actually supplying specs becomes apparent

Well what happened was I had read some good preliminary reviews on the xconnect, so I decided to try it out. Worst idea I've ever had. The Ultra makes a bad smell when running, it eventually made my computer unable to start up. It's fried some of my components. At this point I am considering asking Ultra to pay for my components that were fried, maybe even a lawsuit (if that's even cost effective - probably not, sometimes I just run my mouth...)

Anyways I am going to try to RMA the xconnect and get the modstream. I read that review, the modstream seems to be worth every penny. Especially with all the latest technologies supported...

Is there any PSU that might be cheaper in the 400watt range?

well Mike can actually review a supply
of course you need to read in between the lines when he pans a supply :p

Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU @ spcr
he doesnt come straight out and say its a "bad" supply unless its really is
but he was one of the first to say, hey look this supply has some issues
and that at a time when the public was thinking the Ultra-X was the greatest thing since sliced bread ;)

bought the modstream 520watt a couple weeks ago, and it is by far the best power supply ive ever had the oppurtunity to play with. Multimeter readings on the 12v line under extreme load (2xprime95 + atitool) were 12.04. That is pretty damn good in my opinion

Sweet. I gotta save up my money then, seems like a good purchase.

What I wish Ultra would do would be to make a PSU that's as pretty and smooth looking as an X-Connect and as stable as a rock, like a PCP&C. Hopefully, they've taken these reviews to heart and are increasing the reliability of the next generation of X-Connects.
