OCZ is Dead

After having to deal with a number of DOA SSDs, quick-to-fail SSDs, and crap customer support from OCZ ... the only thing I can say to them is "good luck, and don't let the door hit you on the way out."

My OCZ DDR3 RAM never did hit advertised timings. I have to run 1333MHz sticks at 1066MHz to be stable. But I didn't know I got scammed until I upgraded to a CPU that did support 1333MHz timings out of the box (not a fan of overclocking personally).
 
The bad thing is all companies have their problems also. One will be better in one area and drop the ball on another area. But people posting problems and experience with their hardware is where it is at. Though some people tend to not say anything and this is what hurts the end users. Not 100% sure what is going on with OCZ right now.

They was going to send me back a refurbished ssd. When I read the rma status, I gave them a call. Told them this is my 3rd rma on this model. Why would you send me back a "RF" model back to me. The shipping and down time on this is very bad. They said they would upgrade me when they send out the ssd. They upgraded me from a Agility 2 to a Vertex 3. But still a 60Gb ssd, but at least they did something though.

That may be helpful in problem solving, but that sort of anecdotal evidence is not at all helpful in determining relative failure rates or problem rates. It is very difficult to determine useful failure rates for most consumer computer equipment, but the return rates that hardware.fr compiles every six months is often helpful. OCZ SSDs are consistently terrible in the hardware.fr data.
 
Everyone is getting dumped on by SSD manufacturers that make their own NAND. They have a huge advantage.

They used to make all kinds of cheap crap like fans to cool your CRT. Then they went out of business and the name was bought by one of the execs so that he could reform the company. This is the second time they've gone out of business so hopefully they'll learn something this time.

yikes that is pretty bad... I have had like 4 or 5 out of 12 Vertex 3 drives fail in one way or another...

not impressed by OCZ at all, after my last round of SSDs I won't be purchasing an OCZ ever again

If you were right, it might be funny.
Its not though.

I've still got some OCz DDR2 that takes a good 15 mins of rebooting to get into the CMOS to increase the voltage before it will work as it doesnt work at default voltage.
Not so good after a CMOS reset, I ended up buying some other ram to use for setting the voltage up.

My OCz Vertex 2 lasted 2.5 years before it started bumping up its reallocated sector count.
The reported corrected errors during use were constantly clocking up.

I had an OCz Vector for a few months before it died. It crashed my PC and vanished on reboot.
Replaced it with a Samsung 840 pro which feels a lot quicker.

I see no reason to get another OCz SSD.
 
Update:
I did receive a new sealed 60GbVertex 3 back. Not going to use it as I replaced it with a larger size ssd from another maker at this point. As I don't feel like worrying if my ssd is going to die at any giving time.
 
Ocz is going out of business?! Their ssds write speeds are the best in the market. They rival Samsungs. Is anyone buying them or something?
 
I remember the darker days in the early 2000's, where I had a few OCZ video cards crap out on me. Recently, I've been using an OCZ Z-Drive, which is a $2000 PCIe SSD. Support has been terrible- they don't reply to e-mails, and they don't offer anything close to reasonable Linux driver support.

They always struck me as kinda shady, but the Z-Drive looked like a good deal for that level of performance. Who knows what the future may hold..
 
Asus has went that route with ssds now. Making a pci-express driven ssd.

I've had nothing but problems with failing SSD's from OCZ so not suprising. Although, I've had some Reaper ram running in a couple of systems that has been outstanding in performance for years.
 
The only positive thing about OCZ I can think about was one of their moderators (Tony?) inventing dozens of write saving optimisations in OSes to help people with first jmicron controler ssds.

But then they unleashed the plague of Sand Force controlers upon the world so they definitly deserve it.
