I got this response from OCZ today. Remember the next time you buy memory.

Unfortunately, very recently we have stopped producing DDR2 memory. Due to this change in production our ability to replace DDR2 memory has been limited to sending a comparable DDR3 kit as a replacement. We do realize this causes an inconvenience, and for that we do apologize.

This means that you will also have to replace (upgrade) your system's motherboard (and possibly the CPU) in order to have a working system at all, especially if your main (or "newest") system or motherboard still uses DDR2 memory.

They want to pay $40. They say the current market value for PC2-8500 5-5-5-15 is $20 a gig. Also there web site is still referring buyers to retail stores and they admit there are no replacements for bad memory.

yet they still have this whole section of their site up devoted to their DDR2 line, with no mention of it being end-of-life anywhere.

i like OCZ, i would have expected better of them.

$20/gig for a used stick of DDR2 is probably around the average, though. however i dont understand them offering to send you DDR3 as a replacement. its better than nothing, but DDR 2 and 3 are not interchangable so it would obviously be useless to you.

well newegg do have one 2GB stick that meets those specs and those prices. Maybe take OCZ's refund and buy that?

I guess it depends on whether you think that companies should do what is necessary to meet their warranties. I mean it's one thing if replacements are unobtainable but that is hardly the case here.

I remember a story years ago (think it was in the late era of 72 pin simms or early dims) of someone getting a memory error old peice of (non-pc, think it was a printer or something) equipment that took SIP memory modules and was giving a memory error. He noticed the modules were kingston, called them up and they sent him exact replacements.
