The official website is showing a price of $599 for the Oculus Rift. The kit includes the headset, a sensor, Oculus Remote, cables, Xbox One Controller, EVE: Valkyrie, and Lucky's Tale. Anyone here biting at that price?

Ummm...No! Much like the 3D stuff, this will be muh cheaper by the end of the year. $250-$300 max for me.

That's a tough one... :(

$400 or under and it was a day one pre-order for me. At $600 I'm going to have to give a lot of thought to whether I want to be an early adopter and deal with all the issues that comes with that... Or stick around for the v2 which will likely be cheaper and better. Hmmm...

I just want the core unit. They can keep the stupid controller and game.

I havent used one yet so hard to say. But basically unless its $200 or less, unless I can try it somewhere first I wont bother.

This reminds me so much of the Neo Geo launch, 3do, and Saturn. Do these big wigs in the industry never learn? You need to price competitively or people won't buy. This already has a strike against it that it needs a pretty beefy comp, then now the price. The final nail could be not enough software useable with it or lack of integration in games, and voila.

I'm not biting on a pre-order, but I'm open to that price point. I just need to test it out first.

It really bothers me that I know how beefy of a PC you need to run this, but they don't have that information up front...

Ideal price point would be (imo) $399.99. I'm willing to try at $599.99 but it's not going to reach mass integration at that level imo when you need to spend a decent amount otherwise.

600$ is insane , if they wanted a true VR revolution this is not the way.
not to mention its just pre-order for March.

Wow. They just opened the door for Valve to rip them a new one. If the HTC/Valve units come in at $299-$399, they'll steal the market.

Valve could very well use it as a way to drive Steam sales even higher.

Not likely. The Vive has more tech and is marketed thus far as a "premium" VR device. It will probably be more expensive than the Oculus. If anyone wins from this it's Sony. They have the best chance of getting big market penetration, imo.

As a standalone product that price is perfectly fine. But as a peripheral to high end PCs? It's just too steep.

They have to be working on some kind of stand alone version otherwise they are loosing out on a huge segment of potential buyers. And I get it....they want to be the definitive true VR experience with no compromises but they really ought to be more transparent about their roadmap/pricing/release windows.

Not knowing that there is a more consumer friendly version of the product coming down the pipeline, people willing to try the VR experience are going to go for something like the Samsung Gear, Project Morpheus, etc... which will only end up pushing Oculus out of the market altogether.

I've got a Google Cardboard headset (Knox Next VR Viewer) and that alone has convinced me of the huge potential VR has but Oculus needs to refocus from the niche hardcore PC gaming crowd they're after to something way more affordable and mainstream.

With the USD to CAD conversion, that's like ~$850 before tax and shipping.
No way Jose.

Sometimes living in Canada sucks.

But even at $600 CAD I wouldn't get it. Like others on here, I would wait till it drops to $2-300

I feel like this price point is going to cause a lot of people to hesitate and wait.

Also eve valk coming with xbone controller when the game is not being released on that platform.

$600 is still relatively inexpensive compared to the GPU cost to run this properly, or even just the cost of a good monitor.

$600 just so I can look like Bender? I don't think so.

Core i5-4590 + GTX 970/R9 290 were said to be minimums previously but i'm guessing it'll be largely dependant on the individual game. That's also what is going to keep me from pre-ordering instantly as well - i want to see what's actually done with the tech game-play wise :p

Are going to get a [H] review of this product? I'm curious to see how well different GPUs are going to run with this guy.

Waiting to see what the retail of the Vive offers and price.

I got my pre-order in right away, so March shipping.

Ya $600 US is pretty steep. I'm in Canada so it's going to cost me close to a grand after exchange, shipping, and brokerage.

But let's add some perspective. $600 US for bleeding edge VR tech. You could pay $600 for a decent mid range smart phone, $600 for a decent mid range monitor.

The first batch scheduled to ship in March was sold in 14 minutes. Last I checked pre-orders getting placed are up to May. Just a couple days ago Lucky said "If we happen to sell all the inventory we will be building up, we'll keep accepting pre-orders that will ship at a later date". They sold all that within 14 Minutes!

If you still don't think it's worth $600. Check to see what the earliest pre-order slots are going for on ebay..

I was expecting $500 to be honest but either way I was going to wait for reviews and content. And likely a v2 as I'm sure there will be some problems.

It didn't make sense to me to get one before the new video cards come out this year as the requirements are a GTX 970 or AMD 290 or better so I needed a new video card anyways. I believe those are tentatively due in the summer timeframe.. but I bet they'll be in short supply as we've been waiting 4 years for a true gpu process jump.

1440p x 2.

It's rendering a separate image for each eye.

It's actually 2160×1200 at 90Hz per eye. Big thing though is they want that 90fps rate for clean motion head tracking. But titles designed for the rift won't be nearly as heavy with textures / shadows, etc to make it easier on the system. Minimum card recommended is a GTX970.

I do also hope [H] get's their hands on one for benchmarking, that will help greatly.

Also greatly anticipating upcoming GPU releases this year..

That would be also a nice metric for all future benchmarks and I think would in turn help people know best what to buy.

$600 huh... well that's gonna suck because it'll likely cost $750 - 800 in Europe.

No.

Also the bench-marking parameters could be substantially different as well, given target frame rates and the possible differences we will be seeing between VR titles and standard monitor titles.

Also really curious to see how well SLI / Crossfire performance will scale. I recall the GPU vendors saying their drivers will be particularly suited for VR with multiple GPU's. Basically a GPU rendering each eye. Could we possible see up to 100% scaling as a result?

What games does the Rift support out of box? Does it support Fallout 4?

Doubt it, games are being specifically developed for the rift. Many of which are exclusive by the sounds of it. Could possibly be exclusive games for the Vive as well.

Full games list have not been announced yet, but sounds like there will be a pretty long list.

If I could have purchased the core hardware with nothing else for $300-350 I might have been tempted.

$600? To early adopt?

If they intend to make this go mainstream, then the first model is going to have to be sold at a loss. Sorry, but since you have to experience it to understand it, you have to get enough people hooked that it becomes common and anyone can go to a neighbor or friend that has one and try it.

That's never going to happen at $600. It won't get off the ground.

Well, it might. But it will take a miracle of high-end buyers with high-end hardware going ape about how awesome it is. Problem is, I just can't see there being enough of them to create the critical mass needed for it to sell itself.

We shall see. I do hope they succeed.

Yeah the money is better spend beefing up your rig and then waiting to see which headset is better. Not to mention waiting for there to be more good games to play.

It's already selling like crazy, and Oculus has already stated they are not making a profit on rift hardware. They could have easily sold for more if they wanted too. In time, it will come down in price, I have no doubt. But I don't consider the Rift to go mainstream either. That will likely be something more like the Gear VR / smart phone adapters.

Consider Rift >= High end monitor.

Waiting to see what the retail of the Vive offers and price.

I'll get the Vive no matter what because of SteamVR and the superior tracking tech. Oculus is still tripping over their dicks trying to figure out theirs - they just announced yet another delay a couple days ago.

Competition is good in any case.

Let the oft tears continue to flow on early adopter pricing..
