Oculus is announcing its Oculus Go, a standalone VR headset priced at $200 and is promised to be available in early 2018. Keep in mind that this sort of HMD is for those that do not have a smartphone that can act as a screen for use in the current "phone holder" headsets. And keep in mind that you do not have motion controllers with these types of VR experiences, so interaction is at a minimum. But as far as "watching" in VR, these can certainly be immersive. Thanks cageymaru.

Check out the pic.

The easiest way to experience VR is here with Oculus Go, an all-new standalone headset available early 2018. #OculusConnect

Wonder how comfortable it will be. After using the rift i was turned off to VR (I have a odd fit issue).

YES! Really wanting one HMD just for watching movies in virtual big screen. The rift and vive are too expensive for this purpose.
And the mobile phone solution is honestly crap.
Too bad it's coming in 2018....At that time probably I'd have got myself a samsung odyssey or a dell visor.

New Rift price is now set at 399$. :D

For me, that's the magic price tag for VR. People say it needs higher resolution and such, but it's still a nice effect. A higher resolution model would be double the cost, which would be out of my range. So, I'm probably going to grab the current model soon. :)

No specs or anything really...website is completely useless for it.

Will be interesting but only with the right specs. Lenses seem to have no IPD adjustments, resolution and specs are unknown...I wouldn't be so quick to call it a standalone Oculus. Probably closer to a Cardboard knockoff with the Oculus logo.

They want this in Schools and in Showrooms, where you don't need a huge GPU-driven experience (and if you do, they probably have a Rift or Vive setup in a special room for that sort of thing). This is the answer to the $100 "put your phone in" headsets, because the phones require setup and, surprise, a $500+ phone to drive them. This is $200 out the door with the hardware built inside.

Example: Architects: You have a completely open space, you put on these wireless headsets and now you are in the grand ballroom of a building or hotel you are designing, the potential owners can walk through the space and see the renovations in real-time. Change things they don't like. "Hey lets move the desk over here, oh wow look at all that light-glare, lets black out the glass we had proposed here".

Don't think games and bullshit, think about walking into a car dealership and sitting in a blank room and putting on a simple wireless headset. Boom, you're now sitting inside the car....make changes, change features in real-time. Walk around the outside, watch the car change colors or rims or whatever else you can adjust..."show me the $2000 spoiler package...Oh nice!"...etc.

Schools will order them by the hundreds. "Kids, we're going to the zoo, but don't worry Fred your peanut allergy won't be a problem because the zoo is virtual"..put it in the gym and the kids can walk around, literally, this is an experience that will stick with you the way people who say the first "motion pictures" back around the turn of the century..wellt he other century.....felt.
