OC'ing teh Vid Card

Hey guys i just bought an A64 computer with a Radeon 9800 pro video card. I plan to learn how to overclock now and id like to start with the video card first.

Can you guys recomend any good programs to overclock my radeon 9800 Pro...and also any tips on how to be safe about it (not frying my vid card) or on anything else would be great.

go look in the video card forum at the ATITool thread. works like a charm for most people. just make sure you warm up the card before you start, so it doesn't go too high on you.

other than that, you can get radclocker or rage3d tweak and use those. bump the clocks (core or mem, one at a time) 5-10 mhz until it artifacts or locks up, then back down till it stops and start upping the other one. run 3dmark or something to check for artifacts.
 
thanks rogue, i went and got ati tool and ran it. I clicked on find max core speed and it went up from 387 to around 409.5...but from there it went back down to 405...this was all over a period of about one hour. There were no errors or anything so im wondering why it went back down to 405?

Also what is considered a good overclock on a Radeon 9800 Pro?
 
it goes down till there are no errors. its an automatic OC'er for a video card.

i find that the newest ATI tool, it takes the max speed down farther than when artifacts show up in games. you should be fine around the 409 it read out, but after time artifacts may show up. another way to look at the speeds dropping is a safeguard against artifacts.


as far as a good OC, most people get between 410 and 435 depending on case cooling. when i have my case fans on i get 435. if its a warm day i get about 425. with case fans off i get 405.
 
i have 5 fans in my case including one that is blowing right over my video card...shouldnt it be able to get past 410?
 
dunno what average clocks are (and i have a 9000pro) but what fans do you have?
 
Well i set the card at 410 for the core and run 3dmark 03 and got artifacts so i guess i just have a bad card ;/.

Rogue: I have 5 antec fans that came with my case im not sure about cfm and all that but i have not seen my temps get past around 40 C at full load.

Also on that note..is there a program that i can check my temps in windows?
 
418 on a 9800 NP. My ATItool went up to 429 w/ 4 case fans inside a shuttle after about one hour. I put it at 418 cuz im special
 
some cards just OC better than others, mine goes up to around 440, then falls back. ram goes up to about 394(788) then falls down to around 388-390(776-780).
