Ram, one of the most confusing aspects of the computer IMHO, has confused me yet again...

Are there any tangiable benifits from running RAM in a 1:1 vs 3:2 configuration? And, are there any tangiable benifits from higher RAM speeds?

I wanna know if there's any benifit of getting DDR550 over DDR400 (with a high OC of course). Obviously DDR550 is rated to go higher, but with the different memory ratios I can usually keep the DDR400 speed within spec (or atleast within its OC'ing range). The only downfall is that I would be using the different memory ratios, not the 1:1, will this degrade preformance? Along with this, I wouldn't be getting higher RAM speeds. Do high RAM speeds do much to the overall speed of the computer? As far as I know, the answers to both these I believe are 'No' but, just checking tomake sure.
 
When you mean 1:1 are you referring to Ram to CPU ratio?

Anyways If you currently have DDR400 and you pop in a DDR550 module the DDR550 module will run at DDR400 speeds. Ram always runs at the slowest module's speed. If you are running your ram at a 3:2 ratio with the CPU that's bad. There's a thing called "lag time" where the RAM needs to catch up with the CPU. The only benefit of higher clocked ram is so that you can OC your CPU FSB wihtout OCing your ram. Otherwise I'd just look for some low latency stuff like Crucial Ballistix.

What I want to know is does the theoritical maximum bandwith play a large role in PC preformance? Does having ram run at 3.2 GB/s vs 4.4 GB/s have any real world benifits, or just a 1 point higher 3D Mark 05 score?

So running ram in a ratio that's not 1:1 DOES degrade preformance though?

I do plan on OC'ing. However, if there is a measureable preformace difference between 3:2 FSB:Memory Ratio and 1:1 then I'd opt for the DDR550 to get the higher 1:1 FSB.
