Call me a noob.. I'm totally new to the OCing world.

I recently built my first sytem:

P4 3.0e
Asus P4S800 Motherboard
1GB(512MBx2) Corsair DDR400 RAM
420W ThermalTake PSU

I'm thinking about OCing my CPU but would like some help to be sure I do it right.

I am currently running it with the stock HSF and it runs at about 38c idle and up to 52c when I'm playing games. Should I try OCing it as it is and see how it goes or should I get a new cooling solution before trying?

stock cooling isn't good for pumping it up really high.. but it's good until 3.4-3.5 range before temps getting too high. if you want to get up into the 3.7's-3.8's get a good heatsink, like a high end thermaltake, or water cooling

artic silver 5 and a nice copper heatsink should do you fine and pretty much make shure you can reach 3.6 :)

Your thermal paste wont make much a difference.... I build systems all the time and its a waste of money. Now regarding your oc speed you can achieve will depend on the quality of your ram and cpu. Not all ram/cpu's are made equal regardless of what rateing it has stamped on its face. Just oc the sucker and find out. And yes get a good copper cpu cooler and make sure you case has a few fans for intake and exhaust of cold/heat typically you want to put the exhaust fan ontop of the case since heat rises and use the other fans for intake.

It isnt that much money to spend, $8 isnt much after you spent $45 on a good heatsink, and over $1000 on a system... It will drop your temps 2-3C after it sets most of the time..

sorry Shane but saying it's a "waste" is not the best choice of words. build better systems and add it : ) nug nug wink wink

every detail helps in the long run. be [H]!! : )

hehe i forget how militant i can be :) if its not a big risk or to $$$$$ then i do it without question.

I just cant sleep at night if i thought that if i had used AS5 instead of the thermal gunk that i might have gotten 1 more FSB hehe

Its more than 1 FSB ;) . The difference between my processor at 2.4 and 2.5 is only 5C. You will get about 50Mhz more just from using it which I find amazing! :D Not just like 12MHz
