so i manged to oc my q6600 to 3.0ghz, however i can get it to 3.2ghz but as soon as i play a game, my system reboots itself

do you think my cpu cooler is good enough for it? (btw i have another system which runs at 3.4ghz with the same cpu/cooler but different board)

asus p5q-e p45
4gb musken ram
artic cooler 7 pro (i used the thermal grease that was already pre applied)
antec 900 case

what temps are you at under load? did you stress test these systems at all or are you just asuming the oveerclocks are fine if your games do no crash. try intelburntest 5x runs and see what your temps are at. use real temp to monitor the temps and report back here.

well my asus board has a program that tells me my temps

but i used Occt and orthos and they say my system is stable

go read my first post again and try that. if you want help if would be beneficial if you at least noted your temps, though I would still recommend intel burn test since you may be having an issue and ibt can root out some oc issues when other apps can not. plus real temp will give you a temp number that's likely more accurate or at least easier to compare with others on this forum.

also what power supply are you using? not enough power could cause your issue too.

well i just ran your intelburn test at 5 times and it said i passed it

my maximum temps were 60C

also i am running a 600w ocz cooler with a radeon hd 4870 + the stuff listed above

edit: with the power, when i installed the board i had the option to connect a 8pin power connector however it also gave me the option of just doing a 4 pin so i picked the 4 pin

coretemp will also give a better more accurate temp of your cpu since it reads the temps directly from the core dies.. also 60C isnt that high.. might want to go into your bios and find out what the critical temp is set at.. odds are its some where between 60 and 65C.. if that doesnt fix your issue id say connect the 8 pin connector and see what happens after that.. if neither of those ideas work post back and we can try some other things..

but post your idle/load cpu temps and northbridge temps..

now before i do all that stuff

what is the most i want my cpu temperature at? (what is the highest before i get into the not safe zone)

The 8-pin connector will provide more stable current to your CPU, so you might as well connect it.

For the 65nm cpu's i wouldnt want to go above 75'c @load. your only likely to see temps getting as high as this if your putting high voltage through the cpu without adequate cooling. for instance i run my q6600 @3.4ghz with a vcore of 1.3750 cooled by a TRUE120. my load temps in prime95 are 56,56,52,52. never gets as high as that in gaming though.

okey plugged in that 8 pin power connection

also where can i disable that critical temp thingy?

bump

edit: i checked my temps, they are fine but i cant seem to turn off that temperature protector in the bios

where can i find it

What did you check your temps with and what were the temps? I doubt the default behavior of the board is to throttle the CPU at 60C.

Temperature control would cause your computer to turn off, not reboot. That is definitely not the problem here.

jesus guys! sorry for replying so late! i though hardforum was down for a second D:<

anyway here are my temps while running intelburn

It actually was down for a while :). Your temps seem perfectly fine, so that definitely isn't the cause. Plus, like I said, overheating control would shut off your system and not reboot it, so something else is causing the issues you're having.

well since you and i have the same board should i post my settings?

I have the Pro and you have the E, so we don't actually have the same boards. However, feel free to post your settings anyway. We may be able to figure something out from them.

they are still in the p5q series (mine just has the extra pcie slot)'

w/e i will get my pics soon

again sorry for taking so long

these are my setting when i oc to 3.0ghz (WHICH IS STABLE)

when i try to oc to 3.2ghz, i just change the fsb to 400, multiplyer at 8 and change the voltage to 1.44v

Try leaving your multiplier at 9x and raising your FSB to 356MHz for 3.2GHz. Also, try disabling C1E in the BIOS until you have a stable overclock.

no joy

do think it is the low voltage i have on it? (its at 1.42v)

on the other side

occt crashed my pc but intelburn test said it was fine, also i played tf 2 for a 30 mins and it didnt crash

Your voltage is actually quite high considering you're running a fairly low overclock. Your settings look pretty much fine to me, so I can't really suggest anything in that regard. All I can think of right now is for you to update the BIOS on your board and try again with the newer revision.

well its weird, everything is running smooth as silk and all my other tests are saying that i passed them

also my boards bios is the newest version

It could be if you aren't using the correct voltage. Set the RAM voltage in the BIOS to whatever the manufacturer recommends for DDR2-800 operation and see if that helps.

say 1.8 and i have it running at 2.0

i shall try that!

i tried it, still no luck

do you think i have to screw around with the other voltage settings?

Disable the loadline calibration. and i think that is high voltage for 3.2 but every chip is different.
NB voltage bump up .20 - .25 you should be good to go.

Here is mine but different boards. I have a gigabyte x48-dq6
