Hi, I'm wanting to OC my rig (and I know a bit about OC'ing even though I haven't done it before). I use it for Photoshop and Data encryption.

Specs:
Pentium D 820 (Dual Prescott)
Gigabyte GA-8i955X Royal
Corsair XMS-5400? (something like that), 2x512

I'm using a WC setup on CPU, GPU, and NB.

I have a few questions:
For memory, would OC'ing the memory speed or the timings give me better performance in PS? Right now i'm running at 5-5-5-15.

What is the default PCI-E speed? I want to lock it in to not fry my HDD, and it ranges from 66-266 (i think) on this board.

Thanks for the help!

increasing memory speed/timings will undoubtedly help, how much I cant say.
The default speed on my PCI-e bus is 100MHz.

Touch to say on this one, obviously a nice Raid-0 array would help in some instances, but a faster cpu clock and/or faster memory should help, as apps like Photoshop and Maya (which I use a fair bit) make pretty good use of your memory. Only downside is that more memory intensive applications like PS and Maya are gonna really quickly send your system packin' if the overclock isn't 100% stable, so a lot more stress testing will be in order...depending on how far you want to push things. Definitely one of the scenarios where I'd take the time to make sure I can have my rig run Prime95 (two instances of it for a dual core cpu) for a solid 24 hours.

Okay, thanks for the tips.

So, the PCI-E is defintely 100 MHz?

Also, did you guys think that timings or bus speed would be more important for ram bandwidth?

The timings dont affect the bandwidth.
They can affect throughput though which is probably what you mean.
Memory Bus speed is directly proportional to the memory bandwidth and hence also can improve throughput.

So both can affect throughput and in most cases the trade off between faster bus or faster timings is up to you and your systems capabilities. It could be that you cant go any tighter on your timings or that you cant go much higher on your bus speed anyway.
The only way to find out is try it.

Faster timings will give its best performance increase when there are many small memory reads/writes.
Higher bus speed will give its best performance increase when transferring a lot of sequential data.
So it depends on the type of operations you are performing in Photoshop etc to determine if bus speed or timings improvement will net you the max performance.

The simplest answer is try it and see.

ps yes the default PCI-E speed is 100MHz.
I've heard its not good to overclock it past 110MHz.

Schweetness, thanks!

First, I gotta work on remounting my block; right now I'm only getting about a quarter-sized spread of TIM on the block :(

You honestly don't need much more then that...if even that much. Heat is primarily transferred through the center of the IHS, and while a full/thin coat of compound over the IHS may help...typically no more then a small dab in the center of the IHS is needed, as the rest of the IHS is there mainly to protect the CPU core.
