since i can only run Prime95 about eight hours before it reports an error (fine with me), would it be a bad idea to run folding@home? would i be making errors and sending back bad data?

Yes, I believe so. If you're not prime stable for over 24 hours then I suggest you don't run distributed computing programs. It may get you results faster but they'd be wrong results :(
