OCing....32bit vs 64bit

Ok I'm using a athlon 3200+ and before I jump into getting a 64bit I would liek to understnad them first.

When OCing sumthin such as my 3200+ you usually just ignor the multiplier (unless you unlock it) and you just increase the FSB to a higher speed and try to keep the ram at the same frequency making it a 1:1 ratio...


When OCin a 64bit I get confused. I've read the guide for it and it confused me. Sooo instead of jsut increasing the FSB or HTT I believe it's now called you also worry about the HT mult?, the normal CPU mult?, Ram dividers, and some toehr stuff....

Ok so why wouldn't you keep the RAM at 1:1? Does it no longer matter?

Why would you set the multiplier lower?

What in the world does the HT multiplier do?
 
you don't know how hard this post was to make, I'm tired of them, and should just make a guide:

OK:
HTT LINK----not sure what exactly what it is, it doesn't really matter, just make sure that it is equal to or less than 1000, this number is the HTT multi x the HTT bus, slower will not influence performance, faster will fubar stability

HTT BUS (formerly FSB, CPU bus, etc) This number should be anything from 200 to 350+ (200 stock). It is the bus speed that determines CPU speed and memory speed. IE 200htt*10x cpu multiplier= 2ghz

CPU multi (sometimes called something else, you'll know it when you see it) they are unlocked from the top down, IE 3000+ venice will have 9x multi, and all lower multis. 9x200HTT=1800mhz

Memory Divider: This is the ratio at which the memory runs in relation to the HTT bus. IE HTT 200, 1:1 divider, memory= 200mhz, 300HTT 1:2 divider, memory= 150mhz. Dividers do not change overall performance as long as the clock speed remains the same. IE. it doesn't matter what kind of divider you have, 200mhz will be 200mhz no matter how you get there, and it will perform the same. Dividers= worse performance is a myth started by fools when it comes to the A64.

Basically do whatever works best. My method is as follows: find max htt bus speed by setting the CPU to a low multi, and the memory to 1:2 (just so you know this isn't an issue when oc'ing the cpu) and pumping the HTT bus up as high as you can run it (make sure the HTT link doesn't get above 1000, you could drop the multi down to 3x for this)

Next find max CPU clock, prime95 and vcore, you know the deal here.

Now find the max memory clock/timings. Drop the CPU down to a lower multi, and run the ram at a 1:1 divider (htt now equals memory speed) Use memtest86 to test for stability. Once you know this number, write it down, or remember it.

Now you are ready for the final step. Set the HTT bus and CPU multi to your corresponding CPU overclock. Now look at what the HTT is. Use a memory divider that gets you a value equal to or less than your established memory overclock.

IE, my max memory is 250, my max CPU OC is 9x300=2700mhz

So 250/300=.833 ~, or a 4:5 (memory/HTT) divider, which is only 240 (there might be a "closer" divider, not sure, just an example). So play with the dividers you have, they are your friend.
 
As the memory controller is on the CPU instead of the north bridge its a whole new ball game. Be SURE to vist and pour over the "offical" forum for the motherboard you intend to buy before you buy it. These 64 bit boards/cpus are very finicky about the type of memory they like and issues abound. Do keep in mind that most posts to those boards are from people having issues, you dont see happy customers there so dont be too alarmed over the mass of "wont boot" posts. Read the stickys. Google is your friend.
 
what annoys me.. ppl think that just because they have an athlon64 it is automatically running in 64bit mode. ITS NOT! the O/S has to 64bit!!! or maybe its just the way the go about saying it? i dunno... blah

Yes I finally undestand. All the guides I read were explaining every little thing. I just wanted the basics so now the more edvanced stuff will make sense.


It's liek you started with basic 2+2=4 before you decided to jump into working on logithrims/exponential equations.

It makes more sense when you start out with the easier stuff.
