There are few chips that will "easily" hit 4ghz on normal room temp air. As for 3.7 on stock volt? Again few chips, chances are the ones you are looking at won't do either. Not being rude but there are very few chips that exist that will do this. I have only seen one E6600 that hit 3.6ghz stable on "stock" voltage which is 1.325v or less on all the forums.

As for X6800 hitting 4ghz, again if its on air few chips.
 
Thats what I thought, but seen couple of sigs round here where 66s or 67s were just above 3900mhz... - I was amazed, itd been nice if were true.

But out of e66,e67,68 - which one is the best overclocker?

Yep, but thats whats annoying about it all, why couldnt they just made them all same...
So I guess my best bet is e6600, as many people have suggested here, it really looks to be the best bang 4 the buck. Considering it costs 400$, I wont go easy on it...

what? they try to make them the same, but its dreadfully hard. they dont intentionally make them different.

Dude, you apparently have no idea how cpu's are made. ALL of a same batch, regardless of the speed they end up set at, come from the same batch of silicon. They "speed bin" them because the market needs different pricing levels (and therefore different speeds).

Say a batch is 500 cpu's. Now they start testing them....maybe out of 500, only 50 can do 2.6ghz stable. So now they lock those cpus to that speed and sell them at a premium price. Out of the remaining 450, maybe 200 of them max out at say, 2.4ghz....so now those are locked to that speed and marked at a lower price. Out of the last 250, the max speed they can reach is 2ghz, so that becomes the "low end" of the series and those are sold for the lowest price. NOW, what happens is as the manufacturing process is refined, a larger percentage of those 500 can do 2.6ghz (or more). But of course, the market can't support having ALL premium high end and top dollar cpus! They NEED cheaper cpu's to go into lower rated machines for joe blow and what not. So even if ALL of a batch of 500 can do max speed, they speed bin them to several different levels. We as overclockers benefit from this because it means essentially the low end model at 2ghz can be overclocked reliably to the same speed as the high end models.

Hence the reason the E6300, 6400, 6600, can all do pretty much the same speeds when overclocked.

Don't be obtuse about this. There are no guarantees when overclocking, they GUARANTEE a rated speed, if you can get more than that great, but you are OWED NOTHING over what they rate it at.

I apologize, I did not mean to be rude, but I think I sounded that way.

Overclock whatever you get, and enjoy! Me, I am 110% happy with my E6400 @3.2ghz, shit, that pushes my 8800GTS so hard that any more cpu power is wasted, and actually it got that way about 2.8ghz....:p
 
serious? considering i read the other day no cpu can fully utilize an 8800gtx...

I know its offtopic, but can somebody please tell me how to oc my card on new nV controll panel. When was using old forceware, the c.panel was different and all I had to do is install coolbits... How do you do it now?

Yes, a current overclocked C2D can indeed utilize a GTX (or an overclocked GTS) very heavily. Pretty much a 3ghz+ C2D is maxing out the cards....IF you are playing at high resolutions and eye candy.

1280x1024 gamers need not apply though.......try 1920x1200 on a 24" or even the ungodly 2560x1900 (or whatever res it is) for those behemoth 27" and bigger displays....:eek:
 
From what I understand a Core 2 Duo is really effective in the 1024x768-1280x1024 range. As the Res ups to 1920x1200 and beyond the videocard becomes more of the bottleneck.


But as you said you're gaming in 1280x1024 so it'll be real nice and powerful for you. :)

I'm going to go intel when the 45nm Penryn's come out for cooler temps and better OCing.
