hey guys, current setup is barton3000 (400fsb) on an nf7 w/ 512ddr pc2700 (yea need to get some 3200) and a ti4600 ( :( ) anyways... i originally intended to wait for the 6800NU (since my budget is limited) but dunno if im going to do that anymore. for the same price of a 6800NU or the x800pro(slightly more), i could get myself a 9800pro(and oc it if its called for) for around 180, and some faster memory. question is: will my system be prepared for coming games such as doom3 /hl2?

You'll have no problem running HL2 and Doom 3 with a 9800 pro even at stock. They aren't going to release these games and require everyone to have the fastest card out in order to play it. If they did they wouldn't make very much money. You could run both of those games with a 5900XT or less just fine.

If they only targetted high end systems id would have crappy sales. It will play fine on your system. Compared to the general masses, not the tech guys, you have an awesome system. id isn't aiming for just the uber tech nerds with more money in computers than their homes, they're aiming for massive sales.

As it stood a few months ago, Valve's system was projected to run on slightly lower hardware than D3, target seems to be a minimum of PIII 733 with a TNT2 and 256MB of RAM.
If they push for much higher than that, lots of people that would buy it won't be able to play it.

It will run fine. It's likely that we'll have about the same experiences that we had with Farcry. It will run on a good machine with a 9800Pro, just not at the highest settings with high AA and AF. Resolutions above 1024x768 may not be the greatest either. But technically it should be ok.

Should do alright, though obviously we can't really know until the games come out.

If Farcry is any indicator, the card should be just fine for those two games.

Doom 3 is going to be using Opengl though. ATI's Opengl performance lags a bit behind Nvidia's, but it should still be fine.

According to Carmack himself the, the current Nvidia drivers have finally gotten to the point that an NV30 rendering path was not needed to keep up with the Radeon 9800.
I dunno if it has passed the 9800, but it doesn't sound like the general "nvidia is better with opengl" fits in this particular instance.

The target high end systems while the majority of the game engine was developed was the NV30 and 9700, I really doubt you'll need anything higher to play it quite nicely. I'm fairly sure that I'll be happy with my Ti4200 when the game is finally released. Not to say I won't upgrade sometime anyway...

There was even mention of an NV10 rendering path, probably not nearly as effective at sucking you into the game as a real vid card...

I tried out that leaked e3 doom3 demo from way back when on my computer (specs below) except with a 9800 pro and it ran between 50-60 fps at 1024x768. Considering that demo is fairly old and probably unoptimized, though newer features have probably been added as well, it seems like the system of the average gamer now should do alright with that game. As far as I can tell, FarCry does seem to be a pretty good indicator.

I thought that demo only ran 640x480 because of non working video options?

Just like I've been saying for over a year now (occasionally getting flamed for it) YES. Id and Valve would be taking a huge hit in sales if everyone that wanted to play their games absolutely had to upgrade to the latest and greatest videocard. Consider that the Geforce 3 was king when these games started development and it's not hard to see how they would scale down to run acceptably on older cards much less a 9800pro..

No you can set the resolution you just have to do it in the .ini files.
