I want to learn how to OC but first I need to read and learn how everything works.

Can anyone recommand a site where there is a complete OC guide?

I need to learn not only what certain things are but also what they do and what happens lets say if a setting is changed.

Thx for your help ;)

I did google, and I mostly found forums.

I also found many guides, but all the ones I've found where too basic, I need a more complete guide where lets say for exemple instead of just telling me to set my FSB at xxx, well firt it will explain to me what FSB is, what it does so on and so forth.

Any info on a complete guide?

google is the way... I love how everyone that asks questions never thinks to check google.. I always look there first..

Didn't you read the post right above yours?

Polyphemus- it sounds like you're finding info that's not basic enough, rather than too basic. Most of the time when someone writes about overclocking, they assume the reader knows about computer hardware systems in general. You might be better off looking for more general information first, like searching for "computer hardware terms, computer hardware basics, motherboard basics, etc". Or if you have specific questions, you can ask them here or in the hardware forum.

Good luck

Also, hands-on experience is the best. Live it and learn. Seriously, try it and search info when needed. Dont try to swallow all the info before. You'll probably make mistake, but you'll find the learning process much more fun. My .02$.

Unless you break something. Find someone who can show you this in person - much easier to learn from seeing and doing than reading.

Go to this site:

fsb = front bus speed.... pretty much just go into ur bios and set ur cpu clock to user controllled... then type in whatever fsb u want. if u got a p4 it would be usually a 200 fsb u go up in 5-10 fsb increments and stress test it wit p95 every time... do that until u fail p95 and thats ur limit

well with all the info all you guys gave me, I was able to OC my P4 2.0 Ghz to 2399.1 Mhz which is a 20% OC.

If I try going any higher than that windows XP wont start. To get to 20% I had to raise the CPU voltage from 1.5V to 1.6V. Otherwhise the bios would hang, but raising the voltage must of stabilized it. 1.6V is also the highest voltage setting in my bios, so maybe its the reason why I can't OC any higher that that, maybe if I could of raised the voltage a bit higher I could of OC'ed another 5%.

So now from what I have read, all I have to do is check the stability in load with Prime95 and monitor the temps. to make sure that they dont go too high.

I'll be doing that first thing in the morning and I'll post a reply to let you know how it went.

Again guys, thx for all ur help.

Well, after 2 hours and 16 minutes of torture testing with prime95, i got no errors and good temps.

CPU temps was 39*C with an ambiant temp. of 22-23*C.

I guess that means my OC is working OK.

What do you guys think?

I overclocked my AMD Athlon XP 2000+ and never ran prime.
I played games and stuff like that and it worked perfectly. Then my dad came on my computer and while doing his IMPORTANT RESEARCH, the computer got a blue screen of death. It always happened when i overclocked too high and the bsod only comes when doing research stuff like surfing.
So to test for stability you would need to run atleast a day but I guess 2 hours is okay

Great suggestion TubbyBear, and will do. As soon as I have a chance to run Prime95 for a day or so I will and post the results.

Thank you to all of you who helped me.
