OC woes

Hey guys,

First off my specs are:

AMD 3500+ @ 2.2 GHz
Asus A8V Deluxe
2 Gig Kingston HyperX
Sapphire Radeon X800 Pro

I wanted to do some OC, and I have done a bit before, but this was really my maiden voyage.

Anyway, I read through a few different OC guides over the net and printed some stuff off and thought I’d give it a go. I ran into a few problems.

In the Asus bios, a lot of things seem to be different from what the guides post.

First off the memory speed is listed as 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 5:3, and 2:1. This is basically CPU:Memory, correct? And we want the memory at the lowest setting, so we would put this to 2:1, correct?

Secondly, the HTT multiplier is called HT Frequency, and in here we have the options of 200mhz, 600mhz, 800mhz, and 1000,mhz with the default being 1000mhz. I would reduce this to 600 MHz.

Third, the CPU Multiplier default is 11X so I put it down to 10x.

Fourth, I Increased the CPU FSB Frequency from 200 MHz to 230 MHz and rebooted.

This is where my woes come in. The system locks up pretty much right off the bat. I restarted a couple times and finally got it to go back into the bios where I could change everything back to the default settings. Scared me for a minute there as all I was getting was a blank screen. Anyway I got everything back to normal and went back into the bios.

The Asus A8V comes with an automatic OC tool where you can set it to 3%, 5% 7% OC. I have heard this is not a very reliable tool, however I thought I’d just give it a shot and start up cpuz and see what I’m running and my temps. Unfortunately, the same thing happened again. The computer would lock up on reboot. Only after a few reboots was I able to get back into the bios to change everything back.

So I must be doing something wrong here, obviously. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

that is memory ratio:
1:1 means u ran ur fsb at 200mhz and u ran ur memory at 200mhz
4:3 means u ran ur fsb at 200mhz, u ran the memory at 150mhz.
2:1 means fsb at 200mhz, memory at 100mhz>>>this doesnt mean lowest timings.
lowest timings are ur CAS,TRAS and so on, like 4-4-5-10: u want this as tight as possible so you might want to tweak it and go 3-3-3-8 or 2-3-2-7, depends upon ur memorys overclockability.

leave it at 1000mhz

lots of things could be wrong, ur memory ratio was set wrong, ur memory freq is wrong, ur cpu needs more voltage...READ THE STICKY AGAIN, and AGAIN and UNDERSTAND it. Read (cf)eclipse sticky and ask him thru pm's too.

yes u did some thigns wrong, it is because u just din't udnerstand what u read. read it again and understand it.

my recomendation whold be to get a better motherboard for OC, i had that board and found myself at same point as you, overcloking with that board sucked big time. i found out that for that particular board that lowering the ht to 600 helped a bit. and allso but your memory to 3:2 that gives a little more headroom to workwith and remember by raising your htt you overclock cpu, memory and ht at the same time

A64info is a greate tool for a beginner overclocker cheak it out: A64info

If you'd like a guide that will walk you through properly overclocking your system, this is what you want. It's a great guide that is especially good for people new to overclocking.
