Hello,

I recently built a new system with an Athlon64 3500+ 939pin on an Abit AV8, and am wondering whether I should be worried about any of the temperatures.
I am using a Thermalright SLK-938U, and detecting temperatures by a case (Hardcano) sensor that I've attached to the side of the heatsink.

At stock speeds, I get 31C at idle and 35C at full load (folding@home).
At max OC, I get C at idle and 42C at full load.

From what I've read, these should all be pretty safe temperatures, right?

Also, another question... I saw someone talk about Arctic Silver on another thread...
Is that just a particular thermal spread, or something else?
Also, is there anything like 'breaking' a processor or the thermal spread, much like when you get a new car? (something about running it at full load all day but for 15 mins every 6 hrs, etc, http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=797543)

you have a quite high end proc, and you can OC... and it even didn't reach 50C... what more do you want?
 
well, yeah, you're right about that. i'm not complaining...

but i am kind of worried, in the sense that it seems a bit too good. could the sensors not really be operating properly, or could i have messed up with applying the heatsink/thermal paste?

by the way, i'm in the san francisco area, and am keeping the room relatively chilly, i.e. have the windows open all day.
 
A temp probe attached to the side of the heatsink isn't going to give you the temperature of the CPU itself. The temp of the heatsink all depends on how well the heat is transfering from the CPU to the heatsink. Your heatsink is most likely somewhat cooler then that of the CPU itself and the heatsink isn't what you have to worry about getting to hot. :p

Arctic Silver is the top brand name for thermal paste. Its used on heatsinks for CPU, GPU, NB, whatever, to increase the transfer of heat from the CPU to the heatsink and thus decrease the temp of the CPU. It takes a few days to break in before you'll reach optimum temps with it.

And there is no such thing as breaking in a CPU. You can break in the thermal compound thats applied to the heatsink like i just made mention to concerning the AS but thats it.
