OC Problem

I have a Barton 3000 that I have been trying to OC.

However now XP no longer recognizes the processor other then it is an AMD and I can only get speeds of 894Mhz to 1.1Ghz.

Did I break it?

I reset everything to default settings in Bios with no luck.

THanks in advance.

Jim

What motherboard is it???

Try reflashing it again with the saem or newer bios in case you corrupted it....

Yeah tried default settings but that didnt work.

I guess I just don't understand this OC stuff well enough.

I can now get 2.1 with 175x12 V1.65 but XP recognizes the cpu as an AMD 2600+

Prior to all this I was getting 2.28 with 175x13 v1.65.

Any more input on this matter would be appreciated.

As always thanks in advance.

It may be your board doesn't support .5 multipliers....Try setting it back to the 13 again.....

at 175x12 that is 2.1ghz which since it is not the 400fsb, 33fsb or a barton with more l2 cache the actual rating is correct I believe.....

Doing math of a 1800+ being a 1.533ghz cpu and a 2200+ being a 1.8ghz a 2600+ would be like 2.067ghz so it is close to that rating.....Mine states 2700+ on my system when I run my 2100+ at 2.05-2.06ghz.....So not too far off...

I think you are right about the .5 modifiers.

However I seem to have a new issue:

system posts and gets thru the XP loading screen but when it gets to where it whould ask for a login it just gives me a black screen.

??

Thanks in advance

Could I have done something to the Video card while trying the OC'n and all the restarting I had to do?

I replaced the cpu and memory both brand new and no change, I am starting to suspect the Vid card. ASUS 9600 SE.

Thanks

Sounds like maybe something got corrupted...fresh install time maybe!!!

Also does that baord have an agp/pci lock??? this is important as the vid card may be out of agp spec of 66mhz...try to lock it if available...Also if you have an vagp power option set it to 1.6v...

The AGP lock was set for Auto, I changed it to 66 but that didn't change anything.

The only thing I see for Video Voltage is AGP VDDQ Voltage which is currently set at 1.5v. I can change that but it has been 1.5v from day one.

Fresh install is an option this machine is strictly a gaming machine and also not my only machine so I can take the time to start a fresh install, I just want to try and track down the problem incase it happens again.

I really appreciate the ideas, especially this late on a saturday night.

Jim

yes the agp vddq...bump that to 1.55v first and then try 1.6v....It is safe an amny have to do this once we start bumping up the fsb with these boards...Some boards undervolt and as the system overall starts to draw more vcore, more vdimm they can drag down other areas....

Try it...it can't hurt....

Then do the fresh install...Do the install at stock speed with stock ram settings....then OC again

I swapped out the vid card with one I had still in a box, same card ASUS 9600 SE. Rebooted with default CMOS settings no luck, got back into the CMOS and upped the AGP volts to 1.6, I don't have 1.55. again nothing changed.

I've even swapped out the monitor, and I am about to take the original card and put it into another 2200+ machine I put together for an ex to rule out the card as being the problem.

Fresh install seems to be my only remaing option.

Should I just reload the OS or do I need to Format and clear CMOS? I am not clear how far I should go for a "fresh" install.

Jim

Put in the winxp dsik and do the quick format with NTFS and do the install....

I would clear cmos back to defaults and run things at stock like I suggested...

Then when things are up and going start the ocing again slowly and watch for any signs of when and where things start to go wrong if they do next time....Little steps not big steps...

Cool, thanks for all the help.

Going to put off the install until tomorrow, getting too tired and could end up making more mistakes.

Will take care of it first thing in the morning. will post how it turns out.

Jim

I reinstalled XP and everything is working now.

Thanks to everyone who helped me on this issue.
