OC not effecting Folding speeds?

Hey guys.. I just started fiddling with OC and I'm trying to gauge if it's worth it.. I seem to not be having any effect on my folding rates.. I feel like I am getting WORSE speeds on a 800mhz overclock... My TPF forp6064 was 4:15 before.. and now its 4:45....

If it isn't going to effect my folding production I see little reason in OCing as it's pushing my temps up a good 10-12C

I am posting my HW mon and CPUZ in case that helps.. Any suggestions would be great.. Because I don't know if I should expect significant changes with that kind of a boost or not.

Are you running standard A3's or -BigAdv WU's? Did you drop your memory speed pretty low? I don't have an i7 but from what I've learned they seem to love high memory speeds..I'm sure Zero and some others might have more information..

 
yeah like ccity said.. if you dropped your ram timing to get the overclock you currently have it could effect your folding performance.. but there are also a lot of other things that could effect it as well. an 800mhz overclock should take off about a 20-30 seconds from your tpf.. but at the same time your TPF could be going higher because the overclocks not completely stable and is corrupting the data which is forcing it to rerun the same atom's over and over til it gets a non corrupt pass on that atom.. also if you have anything running in the background that requires cpu cycles can effect your tpf.. hell just opening firefox on my system would cause my TPF to go from 5:45 to 6:30 on some WU's..

but hell with your temps id be pushing that thing up to 3.8ghz..
 
I think your cpu voltage is kinda high for the OC you have. Are you sucking air in with your H50?

Also, try to make sure your RAM is running as close to 1600 as possible. RAM speeds make a difference.
 
Hmm... After reviewing things back to stock (but enabling the turbo multiplier to 21x) I'm seeing the rates at 5;30 TPF.... so maybe it was a different project that was folding before...

I need to relook into the OC and work with it.. And yes I had to drop my ram speed to effect that.. I am going to have to work from it.

I think I might just try to push 3.0 or so and not screw with the memory

I have the h50 sucking air in.
 
You should be able to hit 3.4GHz with stock voltage (or very close). I was running 170 BCLK on my 920 with CPU @ 1.2V and VTT @ 1.6V, with turbo enabled. I bumped up the CPU voltage very slightly to get a higher overclock, but I can't remember what it is running at now.
 
Different A3 units will give you different frame times, and actively using your PC will also have a significant effect on frame times compared to when you aren't doing anything with it. I'm sure that if you do an apples to apples comparison of two different speeds, you'll see a significant increase in performance from overclocking.
 
I had pulled my OC... then came back to read these posts and pushed it back to 3.5Ghz (Ok 3.456 :p) with CPU @ 1.2V and the VTT @ 1.45V with turbo on.. Seems pretty stable like this.. It's only putting my full load temps up 4-5C to around 57-60.. For some reason Core 0 and core 2 are always higher by 2-3 degrees and core 1/3 temps are always the same too..

My TPF Definitely dropped.. I was pushing 5:25 on one 6064 (so I rebooted and changed my clocks :) ) and now I'm at around 4:30 TPF :D 20% bump in performance for isn't bad for a 23% overclock!

yeah you should be able to do 3.8ghz with the ram at 1540ish most likely.. not sure on the voltage needed for that.. and at 3.8ghz you would more then likely want to switch to big adv WU's once you finish your first 10 a3 WU's if you havent already finished them..

+1..Make sure you have a passkey, crank the o/c up, and fold -bigadv!:D

I'm sitting at 3.5ghz now... I think that should be enough for bigadv?

wait til you have done 10 WU's with the standard A3.. not worth doing big adv without the bonus.. and yeah 3.5ghz right on the edge for bigadv so if you clock higher its worth doing..

You're going to want to bump up that clock speed before you start with -bigadv. You'll be right on the edge of the deadline with P2684 units. I recommend at least 3.8GHz, and preferably 4-4.2GHz. Shouldn't be a problem for you.

Woke up this morning to a black screen and a dead motherboard... just running the 3.45ghz overclock..

Picked up a new board and 930 from microcenter... Really didn't want the down time as its my day off and I figure ill RMA the mobo and build a second rig and hook my brother up with a nice xmas present.. or just fold with it...

I don't understand why the mobo died... but it's making me leery of OCing now :( Because I feel like it was my fault because the rig ran stable prior to that for about 2 months... :(

I didn't have thermal paste to replace on my h50... and now I'm seeing temps of a few C higher... wondering if thats due to the voltage of the 930 being 1.27v/1.67v by default.. or the paste... I was too pissed and frustrated with everything not working to run out to frys and get more after running out to MC..

If overclocking was really that dangerous then I'd have a huge pile of dead hardware next to me. You were just unlucky. Anyway, it's up to you if you want to give it another shot, but I wouldn't suggest trying bigadv unless you're willing to push some more.
 
3.45 GHz isn't an overly aggressive overclock. I would be surprised if that would be the root of your problem, especially with your temps in the 62-67 range. This is warm but not dangerous. (I am assuming they were at 100% load). I'm wondering about your power supply. Do you have a 620 watt with a GTX470 and an OC'd i7920. Were you folding on the 470 also? Could the PS have been pushed too hard?

Do you presently have two processors? Your original CPU might still be OK and the problem could possibly be limited to the motherboard itself.

Motherboards can often times be finicky and they are usually the most fragile component based on my experience. I have seen more problems stemming from motherboards than any other component. I had more than half a dozen motherboards either die, arrive DOA or undergone sufficient operational degradation as to become near unusable. I am not surprised by this at all, yet still do not believe OC as the culprit.

I am truly sorry you are going through this situation. Most of us have traveled on this road at one point or another. Believe me I know what you're going through. I would avoid using the system in a manner that would create too much heat without thermal paste. I realize you have a good cooler but I had bad experience running without paste (unintentionally), and even though the processor didn't die, it did run much hotter as a result.

The temps were at 55C full load 100% on all cores yesterday... Without new thermal paste I'm hitting 68-70C on full load on the i7 930 now.. I think I will have to order some new thermal paste.. Not sure what to go with though... :-/ i heard the h50 had awesome thermal paste on it from factory..

I thought it might be power related but this is a TX650 corsair.. I've done the math and with all 3 of my hdds (now 2 hooked up) it should only pull 540w.. And that's including the additions for the i7 920 and the 470.................I'd guess overclocking requires additional power as well.. I'm just not sure how much?

The PSU is fine though.. it's chugging away fine right now with one less hdd and the 920..

I definitely need some thermal paste.. and I'm weary of OCing again unless it was just a run of bad luck.. or maybe I need a stronger PSU?

I don't think I was overvolting though... CPU was at 1.20V and CoreVTT was at +350mv (1.55v) and from what I've read that's no where near any of the lower thresholds..

I do presently have two processors, running the 930 in the new mobo. I am almost positive the 920 is fine, I put it in the new mobo and it gave me a post of FF (no beeps) where as the old mobo code reader would not light up with the 920 in it.

I would have just RMA'd and waited but I am moving in like 12 days... so I would've run the issue of waiting to RMA and having no main machine..and going back to my C2D e6400.. yuck.. (I did rebuild that though with my 260 core 216 to fold away though :D)

I've had a share of motherboads die.. (burst capacitor on 2) and one unkown.. I just don't like that I don't know what the issue is.. It's black PCB so looking for scorches lost my patience after 5 minutes.. no funny odors.. no burst or bulging caps..

I am not going to give up but I am going to wait until I get more thermal paste until I fool with anything.. I just am not sure what to go with or where is a good place to get it from.. Frys usually has some stuff but is upwards of 15$ Right now just running F@H smp and gpu its sitting at 68.. and has been for about an hour or so now.. I will watch it closely for temps and if I see them fly around I will kill SMP until I get paste..

I just got disheartened because I enjoy folding for the cause and a little for the competition... and waking up to this was not fun since it's the first day I've had off in a long time due to crazy work schedule.. (I should get the OK to borg some boxes as pay back :) )
 
I doubt you actually pull 540W, even folding CPU + GPU. I know the 470's are power hogs, but you still shouldn' t be that high. If you have the I7 clocked up to 4GHz, you would probably pull 275W or so with everything but the 470. Does a 470 pull 265W? My 460 pulls around 130W overclocked and overvolted.
