I have a A64 3200+ Winchester with stock heatsink and fan. My case has 4 fans - 2 intake and 2 outake. I have a very large case also...lots of room, it's about the size of a server case.

I'm wondering how fast I can OC my processor without having to buy a new heatsink/cpu fan. And if I decide to buy a new heatsink/cpu fan, how can I know what will make me get more ghz out of my processor?

hmmm, well thats a tough question to answer, in fact noone can answer it exactly.

You have some good things going for you, good case airflow apparently.

Your memory will probally be the first limit you hit. Somewhere around 215 FSB it will probally start having issues unless you loosen up the timings. Just increase the FSB a couple of MHz at a time and play/use the computer heavily for a day or two, if no issues raise it a bit more. If you go too far and it wont boot, turn off the power supply with the switch on the back or unplug from the wall for a minute. Turn back on/plug in, hold CTRL-ALT-Insert ( I think, check you manual) and hit the power switch, this will set all the speeds back to factory default, go into the bios, which will still have you higher settings, and back it off a couple of MHz.

Watch you temps from the bios, I cant remember if chaintech provices a temp monitoring program in the CD that came with the computer. I think so, but not sure how accurate it is but you should monitor and RECORD (as in write down) what temps at idle you get as you increase the FSB.

Next I would remove the stock heatsink and apply either radio shack heatskink compound (failry cheap) or even better Artic Silver 5 to the stock heatsink and reinstall. Look on the web for "heatsink lapping" this is an easy thing to do that costs almost nothing. These two things will ensure you are getting the best performace you can from the stock heatsink.

There are guides for overclocking NF4 boards, look for stickys at the top of the motherboard forum or the AMD boards forum for instructions/methods of overclocking in a planned thoughtfull manner.

once you know the basic theroy and how to overclock your board and what you can do with the componenets you have, you will then be able to answer your own question about "how can I know what will make me get more ghz ..."

Sorry forgot to mention when I built this machine I put the Artic Silver compound on.
