OC my E6300 with DS3 (from a beginner)

Hi.im new to OC stuffs.

Im using E6300 @ DS3 @ 2 x 512mb Kingston Value RAM DDR667

I've installed the Easy tune5.
Should i OC it in CMOS or Easytune5?

or Should i get a branded HSF to blow my processor if i OC?
or buy a performance ram !!!??

Sorry ...i really wan to learn all these procedures going step by step.

As you are new to the oc game I would just stick with what you have until you start to get things figured out. What I normally do is oc from the bios or cmos as you would say. First thing I do Is see how far I can get my cpu with out worrying about ram timings or speed too much. A good program to use is the new SP2004 Orthos which stress's both cores and do that for 6-8hours. I would set vcore to 1.5 in bios to speed the process up a little. Once you find out your max cpu oc I start playing with how far the ram can go and from there find the best ram speed divder option.

Are you on crack? He's got a stock HSF.

The most I'd give with stock cooling is 1.4v, and I still think thats kind of high for a noob.

I figured 1.5v was safe for stock cooling considering a lot of people I know are running 1.65v on after market air. I also haven't heard of a single Conroe dieing from too many volts either. AS long as the temps reasonable its ok.
 
I also am new to OCing and have the DS3. I started for an evening to use the Easytune5 but then quickly lost my patience with it. Now I am OCing in the Bios. Read the forums, to include the links posted above, to learn how to OC. But, reading alone will not teach you, you have to actually try it yourself. By OCing in the Bios, you will quickly learn/understand how to do it, and get much more out of your proc. Right now I am running my E6600 at 3.2 ghz prime stable, and plan to work on getting it higher this week (I am running air cooling).

Once the voltage is raised past Intel's official spec, electro-migration will begin to effect on the processor, regardless of the temps. Safe temps do not negate the effects of this.
You will not see the effects immedately as each proc is individually different, some will last 10 years at insane volts, some will degrade after 1 year of use. (usually the max OC on it will start to lower)

Anyhow I agree 1.5 is too high for a novice overclocker on the stock cooler, unless he is prepared to buy another one if he fries something.
 
If you guys can show me 1 core 2 duo that has died because of over volting I will agree, but 1.5v is nothing for these cpu's even on stock air. Even if he does 1.4v the cpu will run hotter and deterierate faster becasue thats what all pc parts do, the cooler they are the longer they live.

They've only been out for 1 month. When cigarettes first came out I could not have shown you one person who died from cancer, but now years later we know why those people got lung cancer & died.

Same thing with Northwoods. When they first came out everyone was giving them lots of volts 1.7v+, then a few (3-6+) months later people starting talking about SNDS (Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome!). Anyway, we shall see. Its too early to know for sure. But considering Northwoods were 130nm & Core2's are 65nm (half the size!) I'd say those people giving their processors 1.6v will DEFINITELY shorten the life of their CPU. Whether or not it will ever bother them is another factor.

IE: If they shorten it from the benchmark 10 year life Intel plans for a processor to be capable of, to say 3 years, they will have probably long moved on to another latest greatest processor. But surely there will be some who have processors who will die just after a few months of being overvolted too much.
Whats "too much" we will find out. Just give it time.

My personal opinion is processors should only be overvolted by about 10%.

I go the same board and CPU only different RAM. I got Twinx 6400
I managed to get 3300 with CPU 1.35625 voltage, Never even tried 1.4v
and it's stable for 10 hrs of SP2004.

I'd scrap the easytune, useless. Even the temp is not accurate.
Download CPU-Z and core temp. Super Pi and SP2004

Now, some get different result with different BIOS, I use F4E. Dunno about other higher version. Anyway, you need to set the MCH FSB and DImm voltage manually (not on Auto) because I noticed that the mobo will increase them automatically as you raise the CPU clock.
Also you might have to tinker with your memory timing. in the BIOS main page, hit Ctrl-F1, then go to MIT menu you should see additional menu for adjusting the memory timing. I think you can leave them to Auto, but I find that it tend to set very loose timing as you increase the clock speed. You can always go back to that after you have find the max limitation of your ram and CPU and reduce timing as tight as possible later on.

Go to PC health status and dissable the Fan speed control method, so your CPU fan will run at 100%
Go to Integrated pheriperals disable whatever you are not using such as USB moue n keyboard, parallel, serial, etc. I read that USB keyboard and mouse support limit the overclocking.
Then go to advance bios features, disable CPUID, C1E,EIST and virtualization technology.
then go to MIT and Set Mch FSB and Dimm voltage to +0.1, system memory multilier to 2 and incerase the CPU host frequency to 333.

Now since you got 667 ram, if you set fsb ratio to 1:1 then you should get 333*7 = 2.3ghz instantly assuming that you CPU can handle that speed. The ram is ok since it's rated at that speed.

If it boots then test the CPU using SP2004, test the CPU only, if it shows no error after say, 1 hour, I'd say you can go higher.
You can go back and increase the system clock, say 30 at a time, if it refuses to boot, reduce the system clock to where it will boot. if it doesnt' boot then the mobo will boot serveral times and automatically recover the BIOS to default clock speed and default setting in MIT so you need to go back and set the clock to a point where it boots.
If it boots then go to SP2004 and do blend test. (some prefer 32m super-pi to do first stability test, you need to copy them to 2 folders and run them individually at the same time, while SP2004 got a multi processor version). I would run the test for 10 minutes. Since I found that if it will fail, it will fail in 10 minutes. Then it's really not stable. If it go pass 10 minutes I'll increse the clock speed, that way you'd reduce your waiting time.
If it fail in small FFT, you might need to increase CPU voltage by one step at a time and test again(remember I got 3.3ghz with 1.35625 voltage, you want just enough voltage to prevent execive heat).
If it fail in large FFT, go back and increase mch and fsb voltage first, if it still fail then increase dimm voltage.
My system only require +0.2 MCH FSB and DIMM. My mem just refuse to boot at higher clock speeed no matter how much voltage increase I can give.

By the way, put a 4cm fan on the north bridge HS. It really helps with higher speed.
WIth 667 ram you might be fine with stock HS since you can't really pump it up too much
Just launch core temp and see what it say about your temp. if it say below 60 full load with the worst room temperatur then it should be just fine.
You can always try artic silver and lapping the HS before purchasing better HS.

That was how I found the max limit of my system, I hope it could help you and save your time.
