OC Help, e5200 + P5Q Pro.

Just finished building my system and I'm wondering how far my e5200 will oc.

e5200 - 2.5gig stock cooling
p5q pro mobo
8 gigs - G Skill ddr2 800

Now not knowing anything about oc'ing heres where I am now.
2.5g @ 3.6G (288FSB X 12.5 on 1.256voltage)

My question is, can I pull 4G with stock cooling with the ram I have? Right now its running @ 41*C (CPUID Hardware Monitor) now is that too hot? If not whats the maximum the e5200's oc on air, i know some of you must have it, since you guys are the ones who picked it out for me.

I don't know how to set my memory timings, or really what voltages I should be using so heres what I need:

Memory timing for nub's
Voltages FSB and Multiplier for nub's

Looks like my 9600GT is stable at 1700shader, 675GPU, 966Mem, how far will this monster push on stock? Stock is 1625/650/900
 
I think the chip might be the limiting factor here...you should be able to oc the ram...just make sure when you start going over 800 loosen the timings give her a bit more juice and then once stable you can tighten everything.

We need to know your model of Gskill ddr2 pop one out and look at the side it'll tell you 5-5-5-15 2.1V on the white sticker.

Overall the auto settings for memory give a pretty loose setup for overclocking. Try this stuff..then report back.
 
According to review sites, we have the same ram, just mine have lower timings. Leave the timings @ 5-5-5-15 and up the voltage to 1.9v, Which it should be at. It should be able to handle 850-865 Clocks with those timings and voltage, Which means 425-432. Memtest should show it, if it reports errors, bump up the voltage to 2.0V, i would not go higher than 2.1V is fine, but yea.. ;)

Use realtemp to record temps, its a bit more accurate, Try running 4.0ghz with 320*12.5 @ 1.5V, and just run intelburnin, if its stable, turn down the voltage, til its unstable and turn it back to the previous setting and thats what you need for 4.0ghz.

Let me look up your motherboard and see how your bios is setup. One thing im wondering is if the bios has a output number to what you overclock? Meaning it says what the desired settings would clock out to, for example my board has it like this.

I saw your otherpost in the other thread, just take a pic around the ram setting area. So i can see what kind of options it has for ram timings/ratio, im trying to find it on bittech so i can see but bios updates can change layouts.

Aight im looking at overclockersclub bios pics. Try these settings,

Cpu Ratio Setting:12.5
Fsb Frequency: 320
PCie Freq:100
Fsb Strap to northbridge: Change it to the closest setting to DDR2 800. Were trying to find out how far the chip goes, unstable ram might hinder it.

Dram Timing control: Change these to 5-5-5-12, Should be already put in.

Cpu Voltage 1.5000 - Set it to this for now, and start running intelburnin, if its stable for 10-20 runs, turn it down until its unstable. Also remember, High temps will cause errors as well. I will talk more about this in a bit.
Cpu GTL Ref: Auto
Cpu PLL Voltage: Auto -Might have to change this if its unstable.
FSB Termination Voltage: 1.34
Dram Voltage: 1.9V
NB Voltage: 1.30V -(It gives headroom if you wanna drop the multi to increase fsb for higher benchscores)
SB Voltage: Auto
PCie Voltage: Auto

Try those settings, u can drop the voltage under 1.5V if your not happy with starting with that, 1.45V will also do, so if you get uneven intel numbers, it means it might need some more voltage, then its your decision to run the chip @ 4.0ghz with a higher voltage than 1.45V.

Like i said, temps will also hinder stability, my chip would not be stable @ 3.6ghz when my tuniqs base was messed up, a good lapping fixed that and made me reach even higher numbers, So if your seeing temps higher than 75C, it might be time to go aftermarket cooling if you wanna achive 4.0ghz.
 
Just put in those numbers, seems to be booting right up. o_O

Still not getting ddr 800 ram speeds? FSB Strap is @ 400 to by the way if that matters. Thats as high as it goes.
 
If its booting up into windows, it means its close to being stable or it already is :cool:

Just watch out for temps, and keep adjusting the voltages til you hit the sweet spot for 4.0ghz, If cooling becomes a problem, you can always turn it down and remember the numbers for when you get better cooling. :D
 
She took a solid 10-15mins of IntelBT. Im going to lower the voltages a little and see what happens.

Any fix for my ddr800 not working at ddr800?
 
Try messing with the settings on the strap, if that fails, just lower the multi and up the fsb til its @ 400 (DDR800)

My Gigabyte board has the same setting, meaning 200mhz, 266, 333, and 400. Then it has settings for each of those settings, meaning 2.00A, 2.66B, 3.33C, etc. So its easyer to land it at the stock 400. So i do not know about asus boards, but like i said, just lower the multi and up the fsb, i gave you a decent nb voltage, so it should handle higher fsb well.
 
My e5200 seems to be kind of picky about FSB. It doesn't like anything over 250 on my 680i board (which is currently running 425 with another chip), and doesn't seem to like anything over 350 on the Gigabyte P35 board I have. It does boot at 4 GHz on the P35 (12*333) but it's not stable under heavy stress (at least not at voltages I'm comfortable with).

The stock cooler might hold you back. If aftermarket is an option, this is what I have on my e5200:

Stock is looking good. In my other thread i added two 120mm ThermalTake 78 cfm fans, and those bad boys peeled off half my fingernail when I stuck my finger in them. So for now stock is fine. Crysis is playing awesome. When I take my 9600gt back to best buy, I will purchase that cooler you recommended though because its sexy. I just hope it fits inside my case. Do you happen to have any pics of it placed beside an american bill? (Bills are almost 6" even so its a good measuring purpose)

Messing with the settings now, going to see if i can accomplish anything.

Average 80*C Under IntelBT, 35*C while surfing the web, and installing apps.

Not bad, e5200 is [H]ot, i don't care what anyone says
 
Nice to see you got it stable, and with awesome volts, Keep tweaking it, if your doing fine with stock cooling, aftermarket cooling will support going higher.

I actually wanna see someone criticize the E5200, for the price range, overclocking capability it has. If your overclocking, its a clear choice between it and the E7200/E7300. Clock for clock theres is little no do diff between it and a similar clocked C2D.
 
Very nice. I built my bro-in-law a pc w/ the e5200 and when I was messing with it I was scared to give it more then 1.3v with the stock cooler (temps would hover ~ 70*C and I thought that was a bit high). It ran 3.0 on stock voltage but needed to crank it to get higher then that. I got 3.6 running for like 30 minutes with prime then I shut it down because it was going over 70*c.
 
Tissimo, check my other thread, posted about about how i brought the temps down with the stock cooler. Pull the hsf off the processor, make sure all processor is covered. Threw in a few more fans, and bundle your wires up and the cooling should look like sex on stock.
 
Sounds like a typhoon setup, my old lapped big typhoon is a beast, reason i switched to the tuniq was for looks :)

Keep an eye on newegg, they usually have an open box version for 20 bucks, the one i have has some bent pipes, so it kinda leans, i was gonna jump on that deal but it was too late. I hate how my tuniq is sideways, so air is sent downwards not to the back, i tried switching it around but the H plate hits the northbridge cooler =/
 
Casper, this monster is still purring away at 4g @ 41C under crysis warhead. Very happy with this thanks a ton man. If your ever in Mass, near Providence RI, give me a shout, ill buy you a beer or 6, and maybe a shot. :)

I picked up some mx-2 paste from a local store to check if theres a diff between it and reg as5, so far temps at speeds on the teaser pic never go over 59C during 30 intelburn tests, while as5 was around 65C. I realized that my room temp was down a few degrees, so i turned up the heater and waited for it to be at the last temp when i had as5 while testing my overclocks (62F). Same deal, 59C during load.

I was also discussing fsb walls for e5200, which made me slap it back on my ud3r and check it out, so far 368+ seems to start chain restarts and downclocks itself. Still a 82% fsb overclock (800>1452) is rather impressive for a 80 chip.

Im currently testing the chip/ram stability, and then im a tweak it some more and see if the fsb exists.

only thing i can really comment on is the gfx card.. just look up 8800GS overclocks.. the 9600GT is a rebadged 8800GS.. so you should be able to get the same numbers.. if your not able to find anything on the 9600GT.. but 675/1700/966 is a good overclock.. if anything id say try dropping your gpu a little and see how much higher you can go with the shader and memory overclock.. gpu clocks not as important as the shader/memory clocks.. also try to overclock as high as you can with the gpu/shader linked.. once you reach the max on that, unlink the gpu/shader and keep pushing the shader as high as you can go.. but id say 1725/1750 is probably going to be your max overclock on the shaders.. but its worth a shot to try and go passed that..
 
So after much testing, my fsb wall seems to be 409, it will lock up during stress testing, That gives a 100% fsb overclock, I ran it on a 10 multiplier @ 1.45V and passed 30 intelburn runs. :cool:

Im putting this thing on dry ice this weekend for some suicide runs, 5112.5 Ghz inc? :D
 
Haha, we did The e8400 and e5200 today, the pot did not fit my 939 setup :(

but anyways, the e8400 gave out and did not work after we pushed it to 6.0ghz and started benching it, half way through 3dmark06 it just froze, then the board will turn on and nothing comes up, and it would not shut off even when holding the power button down for 20 secs :eek:. Guess thats a dead cpu, wonder if frys would replace it? :D

As for the e5200, we hit fsb walls once again, This time it will freeze @ 400 fsb, after much tweaking it only went as high as 381, Giving a speed of 4762Ghz @ 1.6+V, 1524 fsb. Im hoping the E5400 will have less fsb problems :(

Ill ask my bud to send me the cpuz screens and 3dmark scores. I was surprised @ 4762, it only scored 3892 on the cpu score :(
