Just recieved a new mobo/cpu/ram bundle in the mail today. I should be up and running by the weekend and wanted to know the easiest way for a beginner to overclock his pc.
Should a beginner just oc the cpu? Or can he tackle oc the fsb as well as the ram?
Any good guides out the for beginners too?
All parts in this pc is what is in my sig, except for the new parts as follows.
1. Asus P5Q Pro motherboard
2. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4 GHz
3. OCZ Fatal1ty Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

I`ve also ordered an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro to cool down the cpu.
I`d be happy overclocking the cpu to 3.0 GHz, but might try for more possibly. I have temp sensors in the pc to watch over the temps as I gradually increase the MHz.
How do I stress test the pc once I`ve made changes and how will I know (other than the temps rising) if the current settings are not stable?
Whats the max temp I need to watch for that I want this cpu to run?
Is there freeware software I need to watch over my overclocking?
Just need alot of info the novice could use to overclock.

There's an overclocking guide stickied to the top of this forum. It has pretty much all the info you're asking for. Have a read.
 
OC to 3Ghz for that setup is pretty damn simple. Just up the FSB to 333. Bang, you're pretty much done. Set your memory ratio to 1:1.5 to keep the ram running at 1000. I doubt you'll need to adjust any voltages other than memory either. Just make sure you set your memory timings and voltage manually.

And, yes, read the sticky for OC'ing C2D/C2Q's at the top of this sub-forum.

Me too... My new system is all of 6 hours old at this point and I'm already trying to break it :D

C2D e8400 oc'd to 3.6Ghz (9x400)
ZeroTherm Zen FZ120
4GB Corsair DDR2-800 (this is my current bottleneck and why I settled at 3.6)
Radeon HD4870


After combing the forums I decided to start with 10 runs of IntelBurnTest (Linpack) at max stress to see what happened... success!





From what I'd read (some folks hitting 70c+ with this app!) I was curious what I'd get... 58c max.





Now I just have to get to work on lowering VCORE... I left it on default for the first round of tests. Time for more tinkering :)





Interestingly, IntelBurnTest really does seem to put the spurs to your CPU... here's my box running Prime95 after an hour:





IntelBurnTest ran 13c hotter under the same ambient conditions in less than 1/10 the time.
