OC 6800GT has reverse affect.

I have an athlon 3800+ (venice) and its at almost 2.6GHz. This is helping me out a lot in games and stuff. If I overclock my graphics card (MSI 6800GT) then it actually gives me a worse score in any game I benchmark. The higher I go the less FPS I get.

Does anyone know why?
 
thermal throttling, maybe, i don't know if this function integrated into any gpu yet but if your gpu gets too hot it might just throttle back and cause your graphics intensive apps to slow down. i suggest you try some better cooling solution than the one you have (stock perhaps) like the zalman vf700 or Arctic-Cooling NV Silencer.
 
Well your right it is the stock HSF and its damn loud too. You can see the temp with the nividia drivers (a blessing if ever there was one) and it doesnt seem too high to me. My radeon 9800pro was running steady at 80*C+ until I popped a maze 4 on it.

If I go up 10mhz for either core or memory then my fps just seems to die. This is my first nvidia card since the vanta LT was out (16MB card:). I wanted badly to move from ati as they just cant make drivers and im much happier now with nvidia. However, this not being able to OC the thing isnt funny at all:(
 
a friend of mine recenlty bought the zalman i suggested to you and he's more than happy with it. He uses it on a 9800 pro @ xt speeds now. I don't know how effective it will be for 6800GT like yours but pretty sure it will get the job done better than stock MSI cooler and installation is easy. here is a review http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zalman/VF700-Cu/2
 
After checking some reviews I think your right so i should have that hsf in a couple of days time. I'll report back then ok.
 
Dude, if you have water cooling, get some ramsinks and go mad on it. When youre looking at temps are they idle or load? They drop hella fast as soon as you close games, so try something like rthdribl tunning in the background to load your card (google it)
 
I have the pc im on watercooled but i dont really want 2 watercooled pc's.

I'll downloaded rthdribl and see what happens.
 
I have exactly the same result with a bfg 6800 gt OC. OC'ing results in scores getting worse.
3dmark01 went from 22800 to 22000 and 3dmark05 went from 5000 to 4000. undo the OC and everything back to normal. I had a thread on this in nvidia graphics section of the forums and I was also told thermal throttling but the heatsink and fan on the bfg is exactly the same one they use on the 6800 ultra OC and it is not the stock reference one. It is like one you would buy to solve heating issues. I really think it is a power issue more than a thermal issue. One of the reasons ultras have 2 molex instead of one is to make sure it has the power to run at that 400/1100. It really is a crap shoot anyway. I see bfg people all the time get their card to run at ultra speed and beyond but I also see people like me who can't get nuthin above where it came from and have the reverse scores happen.
 
yah, u got ones that car called "duds" lol, me too..well until I get my new powersupply @ least...what is ur psu btw?
