I sort of missed the entire Windows 7 thing. I'm sort of sick of XP and my machine can run Windows 7 flawlessly. I was playing Resident Evil 5 and wanted to play it in DX10 (noticed the box was greyed out, oh yeah, XP doesn't support DX10) as well as some other games. Also tired of the 4GB memory limit.

I am a college student with an .edu address (not sure what kind of discount that would incur), could someone possibly school me on the differences between home all the way up the ultimate editions (differences, etc) and nudge me in the direction on getting it (whatever edition meets my needs) the cheapest?

Get in contact with your school somehow and see if they offer MSDNAA access. Won't cost you a thing.

For most people on this forum, Professional should serve your needs fine, perhaps even Home, although I wanted the free copy of XP and the additional capabilities of Professional. Hope that helps.

I see two entries for my school under MSDNAA finder but I'm not sure if it is for faculty or students. I am however matriculated as having a major of Computer Science, I guess I'll talk to a few professors in the department and see what the deal is.

Is there a way to restore the Windows Classic toolbar? Also, worst case scenario (I can only get W7 at small discount) does Home Premium support ICS (internet connection sharing)?

Somewhat related, I found https://www.dreamspark.com/ yesterday, which I will try sometime this week since I use Visual Studio often and it would be nice to have VS2008 Professional.
 
There are some steps to getting the Win 7 taskbar to look and act like the classic taskbar but the new one is one of the best features of 7. Not sure why you would want the old one back.

Learn to use the new one instead of giving up and changing it back.

Great advice, I sort've hit this same situation but stuck with it. You'll get it in time.

I've used the new one. I don't like it. It "searches for" applications and their shortcuts instead of being a list of shortcuts. It's like OS X's Finder built into the Start Button. I have scripts already to sort out application shortcuts and links to the start menu on things like fresh installs/etc, so this functionality is lost on me (isn't what I need).

Unless the machine I was using was using a funny version of the start button and taskbar? :confused:

taskbar list's recently opened programs just as XP does?

if you want to search for programs you can, otherwise use the small arrow that says "All programs" to those a list of all programs, same as XP was..

If you can't get it via a campus licensing agreement or whatever, you can get 7 home or pro (or both) for $30 for an upgrade edition. I'd recommend getting Pro over Home Premium as they have the same features, plus Pro has the RDP server so you can remote into the computer.

And yeah, the start menu is just an improved version of what's in XP, you don't have to type in something...though it's far more convenient than traversing some massive list of apps like what I have installed on my system.

Now if you're asking about the taskbar and its major change from previous windows, there's no going back to how it was pre-7.

No dude, that's just one tiny itty bitty thing you can turn on and off in the preferences. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Trust me, if your computer can run W7 go for it. You'll be loving the new toolbar quickly if you spend five minutes in the properties configuring it how you like it. And you can have both. It's not like you're *FORCED* to find apps using the partial search feature.
