I just started up Oblivion tonight and got all the way to the City and got a couple quests from talking to various people. My character is a Dark Elf Battlemage.

What I want to know is what do you all think is the most enjoyable path to take? Should I stick to the main quest first or is it more enjoyable to do the side quests?

I dotn know where the fighters guild is but its what all the people in town seem to talk of.. Also, Theres a quest in town that involves you waiting till the shopkeeper closes its shopa dn follow him on his way home but when do the shops close?

Haven't figured out fast travel yet have you :D
Do the main quest last.
shops close at 8 or 9

Well, I found it very fun to do the side quests first and explore the caves before you start the main quest. The thing is that you can level up quickly and find good loot in the caves. The bad guys at lower levels aren't that hard so it should be fairly easy. Also, you won't have those damn gates open everywhere while exploring.
