Hey all my comp specs are in the my sig.

I just installed and started playing Oblivion.

I put res to 1280x1040 or w/e that res is

all settings on high, HDR on, almost all the bells and whistles on max (like distance crap and all that).....

I get decent performance (don't know the FPS but its smooth), but sometimes outside (especially at night) it will get a tad too choppy (definately <25fps here)

just wondering, whats the best way to get performance, should i not use HDR or what??

just curious

Something is definitely wrong there... I don't get any choppiness at all on my rig, at least for the most part, with a higher resolution and everything on max. I don't have HDR on though, try disabling that. And if that doesn't work, mess with the resolution. Perhaps such a "low" resolution is holding your graphics card back as well. I have no idea.

I've heard of people getting a lot of choppyness after staying outside for a while. Once they go inside then back out it is fine. Have you tried that?

I believe that the file manager has decided that in an outdoor environment the manager would put the outside textures toward the top of the list for faster loading and queuing.

Any suggestions to that CptFalcon

Ok I'm gonna try disabling HDR
Is there a way to find my FPS???

tdt #

# is a number, different ones will show different info. I believe tdt 4 will show just the FPS.
Or you can download free version of FRAPS. Either way :)

A quicker way, I think, to get the same effect would be to press ~ and type in pcb.

HD pretty much freshly defragged.

FPS looks like its pretty much staying at 60 (no more no less)

it will dip sometimes because of lighting effects but so far so good

you only have a 320mb 8800GTS, and you said you had everything maxed. well maxed grass distance is a real performance killer and eats video memory up. try it at half.

Or off. It looks crap at a distance but for me it seems worse to have grass as anything but full or off, for consistency reasons. Besides, grass off still looks pretty spiffy, especially with some texture mods. Makes finding dropped items easier too.

I don't care for grass, especially if its not at the maximum distance on the slider. I think it looks really crappy in the mountainous areas around Bruma. I usually leave it off, and self-shadows too. The self-shadows are horrible in Oblivion.

I found that using reduced grass density combined with the short grass mod allows you to not only find items easily, but also push grass far beyond normal view distance with ini editing.

Sounds good, but unfortunately i'm not hardcore enough/too clueless to frig about with .inis
