I need some tips on how to correctly pick a lock in Oblivion. I have found some VERY nice items that i AM alloud to take, just they are under lock and key.

Please go into full detail on your methods. And if there is any way for me to bump up my lockpick skills, how do i do it? I'de be willing to pay lots to get those 4pin locks open with ease..... lil' help?

just buy a tonne of picks and mash the auto button to get higher skill, dont worry bout tryin it properly till later on cause itll just piss you off.

Remember, Oblivion rewards failure, so it doesnt matter if it picks or not, just tryin is whatll get you more skill. Its kinda like alchemy, you can master it by just eating ingrdients or making the same potion 1000 times

my lock picking tip

Quicksave
Auto-attempt lock

if fail, then quickload and try again
if success then continue with game

I only had 1 lockpick lot of times (had a hard time finding them, but me murdering all the shop keepers may have had something to do with it).

Keep pushing the pin until it falls fast. Right after it falls the fastest, it will fall the slowest and you can get it to stick. I rarely break picks.

Bingo. The security skill means nothing if you can play the game. Just hit it twice, and (if it falls down fast) the second time it should get stuck.

When I got out of the caves I had ~45 lockpics (I don't even know how I found that many :p ). I had probably only broken 1 or 2.

Same here.

I just pick the locks manually. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to count the pushes it takes in between slowly falling pins. Never takes more than three pushes to get a slow falling pin. Never.

The key to picking locks is to listen! The tumblers make a subtle but different sound for when it stays up for a while. If you hear "Tink" don't try to secure it. If you hear "Tuh-Tink" it'll stay up for a while. That's when you secure it.

the manual says you can also press space to get them to stick, but for me only the mouse works. anyone kknow why that is?

I know you can find them but in some cases I really needed them and I couldnt find them. Where can you buy them at?

you can buy them from your fence if you're in the thieves guild or there is a guy round by the stables outside the imperial city that sells em. go NE (i think) of the stables and follow the city wall, you will run into him.

You can also do it by sound, the double "ping" sound (which occurs when the pin goes up and down the slowest) is when you should click.

Counting doesn't seem to work on the higher level locks though as the number of fast falls between the slow fall changes.

At first this was the most annoying part of the game. I have recently become a professional at it though. My security level is only 20 which isnt very high.

What I doo is watch the sping with my eye. When i make the lock move up and the spring disapears immediately from my view I know not to do anything. When I make the lock move up and I see the sping move I know it went slow enough for me to click and get it to stay. I say 9 out of 10 times I can do an Average or Hard lock on the first or second attempt.

I too did use the save before you attempt and reload if you need to tactic :)

lock picking
something that I think I've figured out for picking locks...
with each lock, you will notice that when you move the mouse up, the thing will move up and fall back down at different rates/speeds. Sometimes the thing will go up then come right back down, and other times it will go up, then will come back down after staying up there for a short moment. There is a pattern to this and it is different with each lock. From what I can tell, it is easier to lock the thing in place when it stays up for a longer amount of time, and if it just comes back down without any delay it won't be possible to get it to lock in place. So what you have to do is figure out the pattern before you click. Once you've got it, it should be easier..
- again, I'm not totally sure if this is correct. But I have opened a "Very Hard (5 things to lock in place)" lock with one lockpick. Maybe I was lucky, but it seems to work very well. I am not a member of the thieves guild, I am a fighter with only 25 skill and I don't have trouble picking locks.. I have around 40 on me because they don't break often..

also, something I just figured out is if your security is higher, the pins or whatever will stay up longer. I added 100 security to my guy, and every lock was so easy.. I could open them all in the first try without looking for any pattern. But high security is not needed. It is possible to open very hard locks with low security (I did them fine with 20 security, with one lock pick), you just have to take your time and find the pattern.

What do you mean - get it to stay - I click the damn thing - it goes up and then comes back down before I can get the pick to another pin to push it up as well...

um wow...

You click it and then use the mouse key to lock it in place, then you move onto the next pin.

So DO ONE PIN AT A TIME :)

You have to lock each pin one at a time. Push it up, when it hesitates click your mouse button. Then do the next.

for those of you who say u can open the 4-5 locks with ease. FU! lol, i dont see how u guys do it with ease... there is this awesome green sword i could have if i could open the lock, but im terrible at it. :(

eh, it's not "easy" for me, but if I spend time looking for the pattern I can open them with one or 2 locks. The thing that sucks most is when you get 4 of them locked in place, then you break a pick on the 5th one and then 3 of them fall down :( I usually spend a lot more time on that 5th one.

and that green sword, is it in one of those display cases? if it's just in a guild house or something it might just be a display weapon, and do 0 damage :p

oh - so you click the mouse button to get it to raise and then click it again to get it to stay? I thought that you had to race to get all of them clicked when the first one was falling slowly

Keep in mind that as your security skill rises, so will the "pause" on the tumbler, which will make it easier.

I don't know if this affects it but I have better results doing this with locks that have 3 or more pins(if you cant pick 2 or 1 then you need more help then I can give):
I start at one pin on the side(ie the first one on the left), then I go to the opposite pin(ie the last one on the right), then I do the ones in the middle in the same fashion.

3 pins
1 3 2
4 pins
1 3 4 2
5 pins
1 3 5 4 2

Copy from a post I made earlier

"Lock picking is all about sound guys. When you first tap up on your mouse you hear a "tink"-if you hear a more quiet but higher pitched tink as soon as it reaches the top, quickly hit your mouse button. If you do not hear that 2nd higher pitched tink and you click, your lockpick will break.

I have a security skill of only 20, but I can open a very hard lock with one lockpick."

I'm with t3mp on this one: it's all about the sound, guys.

Forget about jiggling the pins up/down until you recognize a "pattern." By using the tink/tuh-tink sound, you know immediately whether to secure the pin or not. There isn't "did that pin fall slower or faster last time" second guessing yourself.

Get good at it, and you'll be able to pick hard locks with one pick. Blindfolded.
:)

For the most part, they follow a sequence. On an easy lock, the pin will go up, and wait a half second or so, then come back down, then the next time it will go up and come down immediately, then it repeats. On the harder ones, it comes back down quickly several times before staying up a while. You just have to learn the sequence.

Pattern recognition won't get you as far as sound recognition will. Seriously, try it. It works.

I've found that pretty much every lock can be picked using the same easy method. Bump up the latches a few times just to watch the varying speeds that they come down at. There's a certain extremely slow bump that seems to hang at the top for half a second or so before falling back down.

That extremely slow bump is what you want. Learn to hear/see that, and click to secure the latch while it's hanging at the top of the lock. Keep bumping and waiting and using the slow bump to secure each latch until you've picked the lock.

Works every single time without fail, and is damn-easy to do.

there is a quest you can get for an unbreakable lock pick... just got it today. i got sick of running out of picks and leaving lots of loot behind.

thats why I quicksave right before the chest/door I want to unlock, for the price of a little bit of loading you get infinite lock picks until you open it.

Plus, if you open it up and found out that you wasted 5 lockpicks for a very hard INKWELL...you can just say "fuck it" and move on to the next ;)

if its in the fighters guild GL its a replica, if your a member they let you pick the lock and trust me unless you want it for decoration it does 1 damage and break immediatly

yea... i found that out the hard way... now even though they LET me pick the lock they are all saying " i stole from the guild " so i need to go talk to jojhan something (some girls name) in the fighters guild, but i cant find her..... ugh..... this game requires a lot of memory, that i have smoked away....

What he said. It corresponds to the sound thing other folks have been saying.

Of course you need to have the patience to stick around in the mini-game for a good minute at times in order to properly test each tumbler and wait for the right "slow drop" tumbler.
