I just got Oblivion for my PC...and i have no clue what to do....
anybody got some tips on where to start...?

The game kinda leads you around from the start. Just choose the character skills you want to play as. After you get through the tutorial area it will ask you if you want to change to something else.

The VERY first thing you should do is patch the game. Get the latest official patch from here and the latest unofficial patch from here.

There's a very awesome Oblivion wiki at www.UESP.net that can tell you everything there is to know about un-modded Oblivion.

It's true: Oblivion is by default extremely easy and not very rewarding. You hardly ever have to think about quests, because - as vicaphit mentions - the quest journal and compass markers lead you where to go. Mods can change this.

Some will argue that it's worth playing Oblivion without mods for a first-time-through. There is no doubt, however, that the game is vastly improved by third party modifications (only available for PC). The best place to start learning about mods is the official forum, www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums.

I'll try to give a concise explanation of how mods work, but you really ought to read the stickied FAQs on the forum.

When you download a mod it will come with a bunch of files. These will all go in the Data directory at C:\Program Files\Bethseda Softworks\Oblivion\Data. At least one of the files will be a "Plug-In" file, ending with the extension ".esp". These are the files that you need to activate in order for the mod to work. In order to Activate a plugin, you need to start Oblivion, and when the Launcher shows up, select "Data Files". Find the Plug-In you want to activate and click the checkbox next to it.

This is the simplest way to install mods, but it's also the most likely to cause problems, due to "Load Order". When Oblivion starts, it loads all your Plug-Ins in the order that they were created. If two plug-ins alter the same content then whichever one loads last will overwrite the one before it. This might not sound so bad, but it will most likely cause your mods to stop working and can very likely cause Oblivion to crash. You can change the order that your plug-ins load only if you change the "last modified" date on the file, usually by renaming or something. It's really cumbersome and awkward.

Fortunately there are 3rd-party tools for changing the Load Order. The most popular by far is Oblivion Mod Manager, but I personally think Wrye Bash is way better and it's still getting regular updates and improvements. Find and download at least one of these with Google. These programs will let you change your Load Order, and change which Plug-Ins are active, so you won't have to deal with the Oblivion Launcher if you don't want to. These programs also let you install your mods in a more convenient way. They work differently so you'll have to read their read-mes to understand them but it's well worth it.

When I play Oblivion I have over 100 mods running. There are other players with many more than that. In order to keep all these mods working appropriately you really need to use a mod manager program. If you are only going to use a handful of mods you might not need one, but it never hurts.

The best advice I can give to any new Oblivion player is that regardless of what they might initially think, they will eventually want to use mods, and will eventually have lots and lots of them. It's best to plan for the future and use a good mod manager to make the process as painless as possible.

Ah yes, then you really need to start modding, and how about some nice eye candy mods...

Nothing like having a nice looking companion to fight along side with you...

Don't forget the landscape texture mods.

Here is a good list of mods, there may be newer versions, so check to see.

Some of you guys and your...well, whatever. I don't get it, but whatever :)

I don't condone playing Oblivion "vanilla" if it can be avoided. You don't need that many mods to get a decent game going, but you'll definitely want to spice the game up some. AF Level Mod is an essential.
