Oblivion Freezing Lock Up

Oblivion seems to be freezing a lot on me lately. When I goto enter doors it hard locks, the screen turns blank and the sound loops. I have to hit the power button and manually reboot to get out of it. It seems to be happening more and more often the further I progress in game. I have run prime95 custom torture test etc and it has passed over 15 hours so I am not sure what could be causing it. No other games seem effected.

Please start threads in the correct subforum. - Slartibartfast

yeah, I'm getting the same thing. In the Imperial City Sewers, it was happening alot. I'd reboot, go to the same point, and it was fine. go figure.

Same here, when entering houses, occasionally, it havent happened when exiting houses, only when entering.

I've had the same thing a bunch of times.. thought maybe it was my P4 3.0 running @ 3.55, but putting it back to stock clock didn't solve the problem. Now I have my video card stock clocked (was running OCd) and no crashes yet, but I have only played for a couple of hours since that.

Also that bug is annoying on my system because if you quick save right before it happens, that quick save becomes corrupt and you have to use the quicksave.bak that Oblivion automatically makes (automatically generated backup of your previous quicksave.. nice going by Bethesda.)

I think I will try to disable auto saves and see if that helps. It can happen anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours for me. I have also changed back to the default oblivion ini. I think if this doesn't work I'm just going to shelve the game and finish it some other time. No other games have given me any problems so I am almost convinced the game is at gault.

Presently running a 2.6 OC'd to 3.2 on the box I am playing it on, it's a P4. I have had no issues, so if you know your clock is stable, I would rule that out.

Plenty of OC'ers are running just fine.

I've tried disabling auto saves, setting the PCI-E frequency to 110 and using the default ini without and mod's and it's still freezing when entering doors.

It's strange because the freeze varies, some times the screen will freeze with a screeching sound, most of the time it goes black with the screeching loop sound, other times it will go black then come back after 30 seconds as though nothing happened, other times it will crash to desktop with an error. Always while entering doors. I have tested with everything set to stock (actually, with components underclocked) and it still happens so I really can't figure out what the cause is. I have played a few other games without issue but I don't really have the free time to test 3+ hours for every game.

I was getting a lot of crashes until I unregistered some codec related file... Can't remember the name right now. Lots of people are reporting crashes related to codec packs/codecs installed.

This has been happening on my xbox360 version as well. As I got farther into the game it started to freeze up, mostly while loading after going through a door. The longer I played the more it happened until it was doing it once every 2 hours or so. I finished the main quest and I started a new character and it hasn't frozen at all yet. Other games play fine, it's just oblivion doing this.

Yeah that's exactly what happened to me. It didn't freeze up at all until I got further into the game. Now it freezes pretty much every time I come back from a quest and enter a building in town.

I got a hard lock needing to be figured out. I play Oblivion at 1024 x 768 with large textures, no shadows, no filtering, no AA, no hdr, no vsync. The game runs fine and pretty slow when I'm in a large field (like when you're near the marksman trainer). I then bump the resolution to 1152 x 864. The game runs fine at first, but when I get to the same field, the game will start slowing down. I start noticing stuff like mouse lag where the screen would have a slight delay after I start and stop moving the mouse. After a while, the game hard locks. Not only that, the game's picture is jumbled with really heavy artifacting like I OC'd my card. I have a fan blowing across the card now, and room temperature isn't blazing hot. I wonder if it's just my 7800gt that's doing it

I hate giving these types of answers, but I was having the same problems (black screen after entering a door, looping sound and hardlock) and I ran 4 things:
- Spybot S&D
- Adaware
- Eweido Anti Malware
- Diskeeper

Even though the spyware sweep only netted tracking cookies and the regular M$ MRU objects, I haven't had that issue - knock on wood - since. I have also found that running Xfire in the background can mess with Oblivion as well.

Freeze on enter/exit happened to me when I had ATITool running my X700 a bit OC'ed for some extra FPS. Turning it off fixed it. I always crash on quit though...so I just use the console, and type 'qqq' to quit. Not a biggie.

Ok, i tried something that reduced the crashes for me dramatically, infact i havent had a crash since (except for the occasionally error when exiting the game, but not while playing), i ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager, and close every, i mean every, task that is not necessary, i had various Creative, antivirus, Ewido, webcam tasks and such, i end all those unnecessary tasks before playing and havent had a crash since.

Yeah I have o&o defrag tools, Firefly remote software Razer copperhead software, etc all running in the background .I guess I will give each of those a shot.

I tried disabling all unneeded process' and it is still freezing. I tried a different sound card and it still happens.

Might have to just wait for a patch, unfortunately. I have similar problems and no matter what I've tried, I'll still occasionally get a CTD or rarely, a reboot while playing. My system runs everything else fine, so I'm thinking Oblivion just needs to be updated.

The problem is though is that others are not experiencing this issue. I have tried every possible fix and it still happens so I am almost certain it's a hardware issue. I've had it in the past where only one game will experience issues and everything else will be fine only to surface again. I have purchased a fortron 700W Epsilon psu to try and fix it since my PSU is known to fail in SLI.

I notice you also have an antec 550W PSU and a DFI motherboard. My Antec 550W has been fine for close to a year so maybe the DFI board has issues. Then again I have heard alot of complaints about antec lately. I also notice the overwhelming number of people to reply in this thread have SLI. Could be a power issue, or maybe the NB is overheating (my NB runs about 10c hotter with SLI) I am hoping this new PSU will fix it.

I'm not so sure it's a hardware issue per se. I think there just isn't as broad a compatibility as there should be with the game. I know a buddy of mine with an Intel system (i875/P4 3.2) is having zero issues. Most of the people I have heard of having issues are using AMD, mostly SLI and/or dual core. Morrowind was plagued by a lot of problems too, so since my computer is stable with everything else, I'm thinking it has something to do with the game. I have a similar system as my friend's system above (3.2Ghz P4 on an i875 mobo) that I use as a LAN party rig. I'm debating whether I should install Oblivion on it and copy my saved games over to see if it runs better on that platform. I used it for 2 years with no problems. Might be an interesting test.

I'm hoping a patch will come out soon that will address some of these compatibility issues... ;)

Same here on my Xbox 360 too. But I'm only 20hrs into the game. I had it lockup on clicking to talk to NPCs.

Only thing you can do to clear the cach is hold down the A button before you load the game, once the logo comes up you can let go. Of course this works only for Xbox 360 only.

Also, save often!

Has ANYONE resolved this????

I mean, has ANYONE who WAS having these problems no longer having any?

I see this thread is pretty old, but Im gettin the same problems, so I may as well post here!

I believe myself that it is a driver problem, likely with the Xfi being coupled in the same IRQ channel as the video card. (check device manager), but I cant really switch my configuration to test.

So, has anyone else found the cure?

Are you using the latest patch? I know I ended up finishing the game and then came back and played it through again recently. I made it about 85 hours the 2nd time through before getting bored with the game, but I know I didn't lockup once. The only thing I've done to the game is patch it and add a few plugins like the colored map.

The random lockup was happening on my son's PC. Then We started closing programs that were running in the taskbar (he would notice a graphic "blip" in the bottom right corner). We closed out what we could one at a time, then we closed Zone Alarm Pro.... No more blips or lockups (while he may play up to about 3 hours at a time).

Yeah, i'm dealing with the problem too. It happened occasionally at first, but now it happens every 10 to 15 minutes. It's really frustrating and i've got the latest patched, tested my memory overnight, read as many FAQ's as i can find and i still can't nail down what the problem is. I'd love to play Shivering Isles when it comes out but at this rate i'm not going to bother if the game keeps crashing.

Here is one, I have ran memtest, no errors, ran hijackthis, Spybot search & destroy and no problems.

I had to shut down xfire because it was messing with oblivion, but every 30 minutes this happens to come up forcing me to shut down oblivion:

This is the only program I had this happen in, not even Titan Quest or Guildwars would do this. I need help with trying to make this stop.

I fixed the freezing problem when entering and exiting buildings and caves and such. :D

I found this mod called Purge Cell Buffers. Every so often, it does exactly what it says in its name: clears out old data. It was made for performance increase at the expense of loading times. Looking in the comments, some people said that it fixed many of their crashes. I gave it a try, and after a week i've had no crashes or blue screens when entering or exiting an area. I still get the occasional CTD but that's rare and a different problem entirely. I can now play the game longer than 10 minutes at a time.
