I was wondering if anyone here has tried running Oblivion on a X1900 and what kind of performance/problems are you getting?

I will be getting the game this weekend so I will post my results asap.

I'm running it on an X1900XTX (w/ 3200+ and 2gb ram) ...and it pretty much runs flawlessly with all graphics at max and 1680x1050 res.

(i.e. No need for a special ATI "Oblivion" driver for decent performance)

Does it drop below 30fps outside and do you have HDR on?

The reason I ask is that I run that rez and HDR with a 7800GTX. It's smooth inside dungeons and towns, but venturing around outside its pretty choppy.

Performance wise you'll probably be doing better than almost anyone out there. Sweet card and I doubt you'll have any issues.

Sounds good.....are you able to run with HDR and AA at the same time???

I run HDR on, 16xHQAF, no AA... I've also been messing with HDR off, Bloom ON, and 4xAA...I seem to like the look of it better. I havnt run the game with FRAPS on, but I don't think its ever dropped below 30fps...there is no stuttering/choppiness at all.

I wanted AA so I left it on Bloom.

Do you have any screens compareing HDR to Bloom? I can't seem to find any anywhere.

It runs silky smooth. You might also want to check out this thread for some tips to increase visual quality on high end cards.

Ok....I got the game last night but didn't have that much time to play it. So far, it's awesome except it plays a bit choppy for me at times. I'm running at 1280x960 with 4xaa and bloom on and everything else maxed.

Wow, I tried HDR vs. Bloom last night and what a bad experience. AA is WAY better than anything that HDR has to offer.

I posted a couple of 1600x1200 shots here (HDR/AF and bloom/AF/AA): http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1029200090&postcount=40

I'll add a couple of outdoors shots later today. In brighter light the differences are even more striking. I prefer the way HDR looks overall. Both ways look good, but if you're a "jaggy-whiner" you won't want to use HDR. ;)

I would say that is par for the course.
The game is very demanding.
I'm running 1280x1024 w/ the default "ultra-high" graphics w/ X4 HQ AF.
All options including HDR enabled, except for no self-shadows which are buggy.
Indoors I get up to 80 fps. Outside it's usually between 25-40 fps. But has dropped to 20 occasionally. Inside the mage guild in Chorral where the glyph is on the floor I get around 14 fps !!

Using the default 1024x768 helps fps a bit, but you can really start to notice the aliasing.
1280x1024 looks a lot better.

Most people are reporting wide fluctuations like this.
Except for X1900 owners who seem to get constant 30+ fps.

:D

Im running a x1900xtx at 660/800 clocks.

I get very high framerates at 1600by1200 with no AA, HDR and 4X Aniscopic.
The only thing is right when a new zone loads, or I enter a new city, I get 1or2 seconds of stutter, then its smooth. (this is probably not graphics card related though) Does anyone else experience this?

Yeah, I get that sometimes but most of my loads are pretty quick due to my 10K RPM Raptor. :) Best purchase ever.

x1900 is a really good card

but dont be fooled about the silky smooth performance ,

if you have everything maxed out this card will go under 20fps at times ,

Punisher77: I updated the link I posted above with a few more pictures.

haven't played the game yet, but judging from those shots it looks like the bloom effect is better placed then the HDR

to me with what ever mapping they are using it looks better on the shots with full bloom, then the HDR shots (maybe you see more, with less glare? dunno)

either way, thanks for the shots, those do the game alot of justice

Hmm, in those HDR pics the colours are a lot brighter and more vibrant but I just can't get over the fact that there are so many obvious jaggies.

Why didn't they just enable both?!?

you cant yet, the 360 version had HDR +AA but not on the pc one yet, supposed to be releasing a patch soon to offer it.

Yeah, I know they crippled it on purpose. Where did you hear about the patch?

I'm having problem with oblivion,

at 1920x1200 I run it without HDR or AA or AF And im getting 20fps outside? WTH?
all my other games run fine so for argument sakes I set it to 1600x1200 and what happens?
same fps :( same fps with HDR on and AF on too it was working fine before >< had 50-80fps inside any ideas?

It was a wishful thinking rumor that has become accepted as fact by some. B3D has a thread about this with a post on possibly why HDR+AA works on Xenos (Xbox 360), but not on the PC R5xx chips (framebuffer format does not support AA on any current PC video cards, as Bethesda has stated).

bethesda on elderscrolls.com forum said:
On PC, HDR and AA are not supported simultaneously at all, on any video chipset, because of the way we do HDR.

If you absolutely need antialiasing (and the HDR effect looks great without it, frankly), you can switch to the bloom effect.

Question @ Rage3D;

"Any chance of Ati actually working with the Dev to get a patch (HDR+AA) out or just hoping they might release something of that nature? "

Sireric (Ati employé):

"Of course we will work with them -- But they will decide if they want to patch it or not."

Probably means you are bottlenecked by your CPU, if that is the case.

yeah , i doubt a cpu like that could be a bottleneck ,

looks more like pisspoor game programming

Dunno about that. No matter what graphics options I change, there are points outside where it dips down below 30fps. I mean, even in 800x600 with no AA! So an X2 3800 @ 2.7 seems to be choking a bit. I think it's all the culling and lod checks, working out when to load fresh data, physics etc. With such a vast game world, more cpu cycles need to be devoted to these tasks.

No, definitely looks more like a smartarse talking horseshit. I'm sure Bethesda would welcome your input on resolving this in a future patch

damn, talk about taking offense when someone talks down somene elses favorite game

it probably is due to poor programming and optimization, this seems to be a broad trend, i'd say a patch will probably fix this

I was merely expressing my disgust about an inane comment which served no purpose. I don't remember saying it was my favourite game either ;)

Many people have been reporting what seems to be a memory leak in Oblivion.
I have noticed it also, after 2 or 3 hours of gaming, things start to slow down and my FPS seem to get worse.

Yeah I get it too, have to close and reopen to make it run properly again, man I want drivers for this thing I get more fps outside than inside its stupid lol

Huh? Where is your link they "crippled it on purpose".

I think something technical just didn't work out..they didn't do it on purpose.

It's also not a SM 3.0 game..just SM 2.0..which I find odd...just a factoid. Guess SM 3.0 is overrated sometimes..

you can enable SM3.0 in the ini file though for a slight performance boost.

Well, seeing as other games have done HDR+AA before and that they had years to make the game I'm sure they could have figured out whatever technical issues existed.

It's pretty damn good on my X800XT PE 1280x1024 with most stuff maxed... Outdoors it runs a lot better with medium textures rather than high and sometimes the entire game just comes to a screeching hault where it runs very very slow inside and even in the menus, which makes me wonder if there is a memory leak.

edit: drifting off-topic here, but is this game multithreaded at all?

Yes and you can tweak the multi threaded options in the Oblivion.ini file.
