Oblivion and 5870 performance issue

Are there any knows problems with the Oblivion/Radeon5870/Win7-64bit setup? I'm playing the huge Nehrim total conversion and I'm getting stupidly low fps in many areas. In my current location, I'm getting about 25-30 fps, and if I cast a spell in that area I'm suddenly down to 6-7 fps. Turning off the 'long distance trees/buildings' option nets me another 15 fps and prevents the drop in fps when casting spells, but that setting is pretty much a must have, so I'm not gonna play with it off.

Most places aren't quite this bad, but I'm not getting stellar fps anywhere in this four year old game. I'm not even running particularly high settings, and I've no AA nor vsync. Resolution is 1920*1200, but frankly it's not that much better even at 1280*1024. My CPU is a qx9650@3.8ghz.

Any ideas? I haven't played the original game for ages, so it's possible the performance is just related to the mod, but this is still rather disappointing.

I haven't heard any specific problems with Cypress and Oblivion...

The original gameworld is tiny, and iirc nehrim is massive. I would try loading the game without mods (Wrye Bash makes it very easy to save your existing load order, so you don't need to worry about losing that) and see what kind of performance you get there, or perhaps go talk to people on Nehrim's forums and see what their experiences are. Or ask around at oblivion modding forums (such as Bethsoft's forum or tesnexus).
