Just picked up a copy and would like to know what mod or mods is the best one to use for refining the textures and graphics. I downloaded the OOO mod but it seems that is for character balance. Want to make it look good and run as smooth as possible.

There are a few threads around about this.

However -

Quarl's texture packs are a big improvement to visuals, LOD replacement will make distant terrain look better, Natural Environments, the Darker set of mods, etc... will all help improve the general look of the game. :)

Definitely pick up Qarl's texture packs. As I said in a previous thread, Oblivion is stunning by default, but with Qarl's textures, it looks almost real!

I just saw something called "make it pretty" mod pack on gamespot. Has lots of different mods in it. You guys heard of this one (or is this any different than the mods like Quarl's) ? This is my biggest problem - there are so many I am not sure which ones to use.

Having lots of choices is always a good thing :)
What are that mod's contents ? Maybe it already contains Qarl's texture pack.
Of what I've seen and used, Qarl's texture packs, have the best looking textures (at least until now), so if you want realism, download Qarl's texture pack, from the link Qarl provided himself in this thread.

obliv 4...?

It's "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion"... or just Oblivion... get it right

Anyways, as already mentioned the Qarl texture packs are the best

thnx - will forget all the other packs and just use Quarls - much easier that way.

Yea I installed the qarls pack when I got my new video card and was blown away by how much better the game looks!

I don't think a 256mb card is good enough to run Qarl's without a performance drop. YMMV

If your looking for an even better visual outside along with the texture packs and have a nice rig, in the ini (\my documents\my games\oblivion.ini) change uGridsToLoad to 7 (must be odd increments). This will load 49 grids instead of 25 which dropped my average fps by 6, but now the land transitions are much better looking and more subtle. There are also some performance tweaks in there for people with more ram: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_9.html

the things you want are:

-unofficial patch that fixes a gazillion things
-better textures(qarls)
-better far-away-textures, or landscape lods(captnkills 4096 for me)
-a gameplay overhaul(oscuros or francescos)
-misc little addons

get the first 4 definately after installing the official oblivion patch. from there you have a good base, and you can download other little mods of what you like. i downloaded many individual custom texture addons for little things like potions, soul gems, books, and things like that. sound mods, like one where you can hear the weather inside the building.

now mods like natural environments don't necessarily make the game better for you, its really personal preference when it comes to mods like this, as well as mods that alter the opacity of water. I like my water murky, and the environments to look cold, so I don't use any water or natural environment mod.

I got it up and running without the official patch (would not install for some reason)but I have the OOO mod and Quarls pack. So far I am digging this game. If there is a patch that will work would appreciate a link also would like to know if the patch will interfere with the mods.

On a side note - does anyone know how to switch to a torch from a sword shield combo without dropping the damn torch (is that possible in the game?)

You should install the official patch. It fixes a number of things, including broken quests.
It shouldn't interfere with most mods, but you need to "update" your texture mod file dates. When installing the official patch, Oblivion will ignore any file, which date is older than the date when you installed the patch.
The fix is simple. Just run some program to update your texture file's dates and you should be ok
Also, don't forget to install the LOD Texture replacement mods. Along with Qarl's Texture pack, they are a must to improve Oblivion's already amazing graphics.

Everyone has already mentioned the high priority visual mods.

I just got the OOO mod about 2 weeks ago and love the game so much more than default. It feels like it is what it was trying to be all along. As far as dropping torches goes... you need to have your weapon put away or else you will drop it. What I do sometimes is keep my weapon out and carry a torch at the same time by using the 'Z' key to grap it and carry it along :D

There is a "torches stay lit" mod that allows you to hotkey the torch (so you dont have to go through your inventory to put the torch away before combat) and you can carry a torch and sword at the same time (with no shield).
