O/Ced PC Hangs When Encoding videos

If I run my PC in its O/Ced state the PC will hang after a couple of minutes when encoding/decoding DIVX movies.
But if I ran any other benchmarks like Memtest or 3dmark 2003/2005 or play any games, the PC is stable.

Here are my O/C settings:

243fsb at 5:4 ratio (also tried 3:2 ratio but same problem)
Vcore at default 1.52v (tried raising to 1.6v and 1.65v but that didn't help)
DDR Voltage 2.8v
AGP at 1.55 (tried raising to 1.6v)

DDR timings currently at 2-3-3-7, tried going as low as 3-4-4-8 but same problem.
My GAT settings are Auto- Normal-Disable-Disable and Hyperthreading is enabled as is Dual Channel

The HDD each have their own SATA channel and the optical drives are also on their own channel.
PSU is a 430w True Power.

Heat is not a problem as I have a XP-120 and YS-Tech 120mm Fan with Arctic Silver 5 applied.
Temps are 44c idle and rise 55c during gameplay and go as high as 64c during encoding but this is not high for my system, it has gone as high as 75c when encoding a DVD to Divx in the past with no problems (remember actual temps are around 10c lower than the ones reported by ABIT EQ)

The SATA drives each have a 80mm case fan sharing the power and the optical drives have 2x80mm fans and the CPU fan sharing the power lead.
The 6800GT has its own power lead.

Memtest has done 3 passes with no errors in the O/Ced state.

The only thing I have not done is format and reload Windows, I am trying to avoid that as I have so much stuff installed, it will take me all day to get the machine setup again.

Does anyone have any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the longish post.

there is away around the woes of reinstalling windows... ill tell you how i did it
i got a 80 gb and 200 gb hdd...
i partitioned it out like this
on 200 gb hdd:
-5 GB for windows/applications that are assholes and wont install on anything but the drive that windows is on
-160 gb for data(mp3s, game files, mods, installers, movies, that kind of stuff <no programs go here!>)
-the rest of that 200 gb drive is for linux, tweak to your needs

on 80 gb hdd:
this is where all of my programs go, all the games get installed into a 'games' folder and programs into a program files folder
this is also where you re-direct the my documents and desktop folder using tweakui of course

yes its better to have windows on the 80 gb drive and leave the 200 for data.. but i sort of needed all of the 80 gb cuz of the size of games these days

when you need to reinstall windows, just back up your start menu and format your windows partition, install windows and then do a few registry edits to get stuff like ut2k4 going again, and your back in action good as new within about 3 hours max, of course you need to keep in mind that you cant just mindlessly click next installing programs, but its worth it in the end

Does it hang while encoding at stock speeds? If it only crashes when it's overclocked, I can't see how reinstalling windows is going to do anything for you. Maybe you're just past the limit of your processor.

DITTO

You're probably just OC'd too far.

Let me guess, its not Prime95 stable either?!

Ok, there's the latest.
Tried running memtest at 243fsb at 5:4 ratio but it crashed after 15mins.
Reduced to 240fsb and change my timings to 2.5-7-3-3 and change the GAT to A-A-A-D-D like you suggested.
Also increase the AGP voltage to 1.65 but reduced the vcore to 1.55v (to get heat down)

Was then able to run memtest for nearly 2hrs with no errors. Did about 7 passes with no problems.

Just burning a couple of DVDs first and then I am going to do a Prime95 torture test to see what happens.
Hopefully the PC stays stable for the stress test (which I will leave overnight to be sure)
If all is ok I think I would have proved that the hardware is working well.
Tomorrow I will run Norton Utilities to check for errors on the hard drives (especially as I have had alot of resets in the pass couple of days)
I will let you know how I get on.

2 hours of memtest doesnt seem like a lot. some people like to run it overnight or longer. you should give that a shot sometime. also its possible to pass memtest 8+ hours and fail prime95 so you should definately run that as well. as far as reinstalling windows go, its always nice to start out fresh (with new drivers and patches and such) :)

just go straight to Prime95

It finds weaknesses much faster.

The only time I use memory test is if I'm having problems at default speeds and I'm testing to see if the memory is at fault.

Which it ended up being 1 time. RMA'd one of the sticks and all was well.

Well the latest results are:
Been running Prime95 all night and had no crashes or errors so the PC does seem stable at the moment.
Just about to install Systemworks 2005 and check my hard drives for errors.

So do you think that the memtest crashes were due to not enough Vcore voltage?
I was trying to avoid raising the voltage too high, to keep the temps down but if you guys think that raising the vcore will improve stability and allow me to raise my FSB I will give that a try.

well, if you can run the prime95 blended torture test overnight without errors, then you have pretty much proved your CPU and RAM stable.

if you had a 6600 graphics card, with the hardware video encoding support onboard, then i would suggest trying to test that somehow, but since you have a 6800, then that should not be an issue.

assuming that your disk and virus checks come up clean, then i only have a few things to suggest at this point:

1) i know that intel platform is substantially different from AMD, however on my system running my ram at any ratio other than 1:1 is just asking for trouble.

2) can you still run prime stable with slightly lower voltages on any of your key components? you have already upped your vAGP a bit to up your chipset voltage somewhat, you might want to try taking it up to 1.6 volts. you might also want to try reducing your ram voltage by one incriment.

Well, I have just finished running disk doctor on all my drives and they came back clean.
So I think I have finally got my PC to stable point, though I need to run some more video benchmarks first, just to make sure.
If they go ok, I will then try to encode a few DIVX movies and hope the PC believes.
If it does I will then slowly increase the FSB to find the sweet spot.

how many hours did u run prime95 for?

after checking with Prime did you do back to trying to encode now? To see if your original problem is ok now?

Disable SSE/SSE2 processor instructions and see if it works. Prime95 does not stress additional cpu functions. However, you're better off underclocking and using SSE/SSE2 if you're encoding.

Good news guys, after completing all my tests I have been able to encode my movies with no crashes or system hangs.
I am currently running at 240fsb at 5:4 ratio with the DDR timings at 2-7-3-3.
I was able to run Prime95 for 12hrs in total and at the same time I was downloading heavily from bittorrent so the PC was really being pushed hard.
Now I that I have found a stable FSB tomorrow I will start raising the FSB a bit but I am happy that the PC is finally behaving, thanks for your helps guys.
I will keep posting and let you know if I manage to reach that magic 250fsb without the PC being as stable as Michael Jackson :p
Tomorrow my new chipset heatsink will arrive so that may help me push the PC even further.

My VCore is 1.55v and the PC is SO stable. I am REALLY happy (God, my missus would be cringing if she heard me hear me say that)
I have just finished running a looping 3dmark 2001 for 3hrs with no problems.

I think tonight before I got to bed I will raise the vcore to 1.60v, change the FSB to 245 and leave Prime95 running overnight to see if the PC believes.

How has your O/Cing been going?

Well, I have raised my vcore to 1.6v and raised the fsb to 245 and ran a prime95 torture test for 3hrs will no errors or warnings.
Gonna ran it again but overnight this time just to be certain and then I will go for 247 fsb.
Maybe I have found the setup/bios config that will allow me to reach that magic 250/3.5ghz O/C.
Fingers crossed

Let me know how goes it. I am still puttering along at 243 FSB. I can not get past memtest at 250 without a cubic butt ton of errors. Any advice from anyone on that issue would be very welcome and appreciated. I haven't tried 245 again though. Question for all you OCers out there. If I leave prime on all night, will the program stop if it starts to error? or will it contnue on and possibly mess up the cpu?

jagzzzzzzz: prime will stop if it encounters an error. the only exception to that is if things are so royally FUBAR that windows itself crashes. start it about 2 hrs before you go to bed and you should be relatively safe. BIOS level thermal CPU throtteling should keep things sane, if windows pukes on you. if you want to be totally safe, you shouldn't overclock.

i don't run intel, so i don't know intel boards very well, however i do know that upping your AGP voltage also ups you northbridge voltage on most DFI intel boards. you might want to try upping your AGP voltage to something like 1.6 volts (assuming that you run with a 1.5 volt AGP card) and seeing if that helps with your stability.

actually... its not just agp... is just about every voltage on the board.. they all go into the north bridge.. makes perfect sense too.. think of it this way.... your increasing the agp signaling voltage... what part of your pc other then your video card does that voltage go into? same with memory, same with cpu voltage. the north bridge does has its own power supply, some of them are linked to and scale with the cpu voltage, others do not

if you wana increase the voltage on your north bridge, you can do it pencil style(just like you do on radeons)... i can tell you how if you want to do it, i tried it on my ic7 but my north bridge doesnt respond to more voltage at all.. i need to find a old motherboard to buy... after buying this one i found out that intel figured out how to reduce the overclockability of the springdale and canterwood chipsets  :( my cpus supposed to do 3.6 ghz minimum.. was tested by a person i trust, he said on water he had it going at 3.8

<edit> looking over the thread, looks like you have the same problem i do morpheus9394  i can game and bench all i want at 3.2 but cant encode videos or prime.. other then that it never crashes in anything, even 3dmark looping.
two cpus same 100% stable overclock.. 2.4c 3120 mhz stable, 2.6c same 100% stable<edit>

Well, my 2.4C will game, loop benchmarks, encode, etc... everything up to 3.6Ghz at 300FSB!! But I have to back it down to 3.45Ghz to get it dual Prime95 stable.

That was with my 2x256 Corsair XMS3200. I bought some crappy 2x512 HyperX 3200 b/c it was on sale and it only lets me get up to 3.4Ghz b/c its CRAP!! I figured what the hell its only 50Mhz slower than my dual Prime95 clock so I left it at 3.4Ghz. (plus I'm at default voltage, and runs a little cooler)

ryuji - I think I know the cause of the problem.
Before I reseated my CPU heatsink and my NB heatsink I noticed the ABIT EQ was reporting the the NB fan was running under 1000rpm and I have having lots of problems with stability.
I removed both the CPU and NB heatsink and fan, cleaned them all up, removed all the dust and applied some arctic silver 5 to both.
Since then my PC has been alot more stable and ABIT EQ is now reporting that the NB fan is about 4800rpm.
It now seems to change according to my O/C and heat.
So I think your problem maybe too much heat on the NB.
Apparently it is a known problem with the IC7.

Tonight, I am going to try for 247fsb to see if the PC stays stable and then tomorrow go for the magic 250 mark.

That's one amazing overclock... 1GHz on stock voltage. You ever wonder what it would do on water?

875 mobos max out at 300FSB, which I already hit 3.6Ghz easily with only a little extra voltage.

All my benches run at 3.6Ghz.... now if I just had some ram that did 1:1 at 300FSB.

(instead of 3:2 ratio like I've been using for ages)

Morpheous: No update on my situation, however; I did bite the bullet and bought some water cooling. A brand new never been used exos-al, with 1 cpu cooler and 2 gpu/northbridge coolers. All for 207! They are all in the package and never been opened! So until after the move I am done in the OC world, but will definately update when I have it setup with pics!

WOW!!!! JAGZZZZZZ
You have must told the missus that it only cost $30 to get away with that.
I can't wait to see the pics.
Let me know when you have it all setup and what kinda of O/C you are getting.
I don't think I will be going Watercooling for a good while yet.
I am planning a major upgrade later in the year, just waiting to see if the new Intel dual-core processors are any good.
Wanna get a new MB, and some much faster ram and maybe another large HDD.

Anyway, keep me/us/the board posted.

Here's the thing though. I saw it last night, mentioned it to her, with no reaction from her, her eyes never left the tv. Then I emailed him last night to ask some questions, ie. if it was brand new and in retail packing, etc. Then I am talking about it to a friend at work this morning, I checked the email and he replied with som I'll let you know how it goes. Kinda upset I have to wait to set it up though!e info, then the ol lady called with my friend there. First words were "What is your max bid?" I was like WTF! Beauty thing is she made the bids, so later on if she nags I can say, I never bid on it! Wierd thing is that after the auction she was like "Nate you got your WC" and was generally excited. I figure either she may be a future tweaker as well or theres another guy =)!
