Dyson doesn't make bladeless fans, they just hide the blades inside the base of the fans so it's prettier.

Sort of agree, sort of disagree. An impeller is not what I think of when I think of fan blades.

And it still costs $400 for a desk fan? I had always assumed an ionic effect of some kind given the ring shape since I'm not the kind of person to spend the time or that kind of money to take a closer look.

The shape does help pull more air through the "fan", but you need to first have airflow before "more" is pulled through.
