NZXT Vulcan case fan not working

There are two fans installed in the Vulcan case, a 120mm top exhaust and a 120mm front intake. The front fan works fine, but for some reason the top fan won't spin. At first I had them plugged into the integrated fan controller of the case. It wasn't spinning up so I tried plugging it directly into the motherboard. As soon as I plugged it in the fan started spinning but immediately stopped again (like it just had just had one burst of energy, then the momentum kept it spinning a few more rotations before stopping.) So then I borrowed a molex adaptor from another case so that I could plug the Vulcan's case fan directly into a molex, but it did the same thing: started spinning but immediately quit.

I'm out of ideas now :( Since there are only two fans, and I need to cool a pretty hot motherboard/cpu/gpu I should probably work this out before using it! All advice would be hugely appreciated!

Sounds like a bad fan to me. IMO, get a new quality fan, and switch out the front fan while you're at it.

How annoying if that's the issue :s ... I'm guessing I can't RMA one fan. I'd have to RMA the whole case. And I spent at least an hour or two working on getting my cable management reasonably tidy in the Vulcan, so I don't want to remove it all on account of one stupid fan.

But you say I should replace the other fan too... Are the stock fans provided by NZXT not particularly good?

I've got the two 120mm Corsair fans that were included with the H70 laying around (fitted it with Gentle Typhoons instead) and one Noctua NF-P12 which I had removed from my heatsink in order to fit the motherboard in the Vulcan. Would those be better than the NZXT fans?

I can't speak for the quality of NZXT case fans specifically, but in my experience most fans that come with cases aren't of the best quality (noisy, lacking efficiency). Whenever I get a new case, the first thing I do is remove all the stock case fans and replace them. I have Noctua NF-P12s in my case, and have used them for most all of my builds. If you can get past the color, they are great fans.
You stated that your fan wouldn't spin, even when plugged in to your mobo header, and alone with a 12v molex - sounds defective to me. I wouldn't stress too much about a $7.00 fan. It's a hassle, but cheaply fixed.

It's subjective...a quality fan will move alot of air & not be obnoxious to the ears...The NZXT fans look cheesy but may be a good design anyway...you just have to judge for yourself...

Alright you were correct, I swapped out the NZXT for the Noctua and it works :)

Now to try to figure out a way of attaching a 120mm intake fan to the side door (there are only screw holes for a 200mm fan, but that wouldn't fit because of the NH-U12P heatsink being too tall)...

Hello!

I was browsing through the forum and saw your post. To answer your last question, the only way to attach a 120mm fan is to mod the side panel since the Vulcan was not built with the option of having one there. Also, I'm sorry to hear that you got a defective fan. We could send you new fans if you would like? Let me know :)
