NVRaid questions

OK, lets get this over with. I am going to strip my raptors. Don't yell at me :) I have read the reviews, I know there is extremely limited performance gain (but there is a gain!). I recently setup some ace storage on the network so I have no need to keep any 'important' files on my machine (software backups, work documents, music, movies, etc) so the risk is worth it to me.

Anyway... :)

I lack a working floppy drive, is there anyway to get NVRaid working with my system prior to installing Windows XP / Linux without a floppy? I have gathered the right bios settings, used the nvraid utility to strip the drives, ran windows setup and noticed it still picked up 2 drives, rather then one. What are my options? I was thinking possibly slipstreaming the drivers into my xp disc, but which ones.. and will it even work?

Thanks for any ideas.

You can slipstream the drivers onto a windows installation CD. But honestly, it's MUCH easier to open the side of the case and hook up a floppy drive for 15 minutes and toss it when you are done.

Slipstreaming them means you will never need the floppy again for any reinstalls, though.

Really up to you, how much work you want to do. Too bad that part of windows won't allow you to use a USB stick (or does it???)

I'd suggest slipstreaming the disk; it's easier and you never have to dig out the floppy again. You can also do things like save your CD key on the disk, so you never have to type that again. Add in any other drivers you'll need (figure out what your next MB will be, and plan in advance) like video and sound and lan. This makes a fresh windows install much less of an ordeal.

Yeah I have an unattended slipstream already, just not sure where to add the nvraid drivers so Windows will pick them up prior to partitioning. Does it look through the Windows disk somewhere in particular?

Nevermind, I figured it out with nLite. Thats a pretty spiffy program, I did my slipstream with the command prompt and editing ini files, nLite makes things quite a bit more user friendly. I just clicked 'intergrate drivers', pointed it to the sataraid nvidia drivers and everything worked.

Thanks a ton, saved me a trip to the computer store for a $9 floppy drive :)

Good to hear. nLite is pretty slick, and slipstreaming is the only way to fly for frequent installations of Windows. I am considering adding it to ANSWERS. Also, the way gas is, that flopy drive would be $18 - $9 for the drive and $9 for the gas to get to the computer store ;)

Gas prices are terrible. But more on topic....that part of windows definitely does NOT allow USB thumb drives. I was fussin forever installing windows with my RAID array and I refused to use a floppy. The USB stuff I exhausted and end up figuring out the slipstream method.

Ugh gas prices.... I swear if I just look at my truck wrong it costs me $10 in gas.

Yeah I was happy to avoid using the floppy method. I have avoided using a floppy for like the last 3 years and, as fate would have it, just gave away my last black bezel samsung floppy 2 months ago.

I spoke too soon on my problem though :) With the slipstream Windows picked up the array as one drive (good), formatted it, copied files to it, did the install process, but then on the first boot (to create a user and get to the desktop) it blue screened. Doh! I am sure I just did something silly with the slipstream, hopefully I can figure it out. All I need to do is integrate the nvidia sataraid drivers (nvraid.inf in sata_raid directory) right?
